I blocked out the last two segments of my IP (like it really makes a difference!), but i saw this when i woke up. Is it time to run adaware again?

that's the same box you get when you send a message over a network using "net" (net send)

To those who get them, are you guys using filesharing software that lets other people see your IP addresses?
How else would they send the messages? Is it possible to just send to randomly generated IP#s?

Its not just a popup. I've had them adressed to my IP AND my computer name.

Dont quote me on this since I'm not an uber geek, but I think a batch file is running netsend with this sh**. I'm POSITIVE that netsend is running it because in my win2k network lab yesterday was command prompt:

net send jp You know this is kinda sad when we're sitting next to each other and doing this

net send jp You know, if there were more cute girls in this class, I'd make it a point to stay after and learn what computer name they're on so I can flirt with them like this and make it look like real work

net send jp The instructor was right today.....is this a sign? I think I see the sky falling, oh wait. My bad. Thats just rain with a touch of fire and brimstone.

All the message interfaces look like that spam, so I'm thinking we need some firewalls.

Maybe it's some spyware on someone else's computer...are you on a big LAN or something (like college)?

1) yes, i'm using kazaa lite and Direct Connect
How else would they send the messages?
2) They use a program that's on most every windows box called net send.

Yup. If you run a port scanner, you can determine what OS somebody is running by the open ports that are open. Windows leaves trademark ports open, which are very easy to identify. Otherwise, all you have to do is type "net send xxxx xxxx"

It's net send spam. Just disable the Windows messanger service (enabled by default) and they won't be able to pop up

I knew that part. ;)
What I meant by that was how would they know where to send them? I wouldn't be too surprised if the majority of the people that are getting these were using some mainstream file-sharing program. :)

DOH! I got that too.

somebody got fancy and sent that using the messenger service to every IP possible. I thought sombody within my cable company's network did that and I sent them a screenshot of it, but I guess not.

I'm still waiting for mine. I've never gotten one of those. Not even on my NAT box. :)

to stop incoming messages go to dos prompt and type "net stop msg" without quotes, "net start msg" will restart it(this works in XP, should work in 2k too, if not, try message, or messanger)

I run a couple w2k labs and last week 75% of my machines had that message sitting on the desktop... windows messaging is now stopped on all of em.... which means thats I cannot broadcast messages to my users such as server shutdowns and the likes... very sucky.. :(
