it's probably a PCV hose that had too much pressure and came off. that's the best i can make of it.

oil tank was my favorite

there is such a thing

ive never heard of an oil tank personally. i havent worked on every car out there, but its been at least 20 different kinds and ive never seen or heard of any oil tanks. oil pans, sure, but not tanks.

perhaps hes describing the oil tank on his 2006 corvette?
Text*pics*

or then again he could just be an idiot.

it seems from the context he is not working on a brand new car, and also new technologies limited to a single car dont really help the arguement since we were being pretty general here. clearly there are things called oil tanks, but id wager a bet that 99% of cars have no oil tank.

This is true, typically only high performance cars would have an external oil tank.

I'm betting the bellows style intake tubing ripped on his car, could be a PCV or vacuum line as well though.

It's a 2002 VW GTI. i went out and looked at it and it looks to be the hose going to the pcv valve. I'm not really familar with the engine but there was a hose going from the intake piping (where I believe the PCV valve is) and it split in 2 with one end going to the crank case and the other going to somewhere under the intake manifold.

What is crazy is the hose actually seems to have melted at the point where it split. The only thing I can figure is hot oil made its way into the hose. The hose goes all the way down to the intake manifold and changes shape again (from a small hose to a bigger hose?). It is failed in that place too. I don't know howtf he's going to replace that but I told him good luck. :p German engineering FTL.

edit: ok it seems like his car doesn't even have a pcv valve.

Test the pcv valve. Pull it out of the engine and shake it. If it does not rattle, it needs to be replaced. Get a new one when you get a new hose.

(and clean or replace the breather filter, if there is one).

Yeah, german engineering is pretty fscking weird. I don't get why they designed some parts on my BMW the way they did. It's a good ole 82, and the exhaust comes within about an inch of the drive shaft. So if the hangers fail, you've got your pipe eating your driveshaft. Great sound, let me tell ya.
