I hear all these things about JDM Civics/Accords - is JDM a legit tuner (ie, a Saleen/Lingenfelter) or just a parts shop?

Just curious - wouldn't it be cheaper to import the parts over or use domestically available parts and rebuilding the engine as opposed to importing one over and swapping it?

In some cases yes but you're getting JDM/imported parts for other reasons then cost.

Well, Japanese have a very high turnover on their cars... its mandated by law. So for example...

Highpo Honda engines that are fairly rare in the US (Bseries) as well as completely unavailable variants can be had for fairly cheap. The only danger is getting crappy parts/engines since many people abuse their cars knowing the low mileage limit of their cars.

Also, sometimes the parts aren't domestically available in much quantity. There are very few real ITRs in the US and no such animal as the Civic SiR in the US. Nissan RBs and SR20DET were never available in the US at all. It's not always cheaper to just source parts when the whole package is so cheap. Mainly, parts aren't available here at a reasonable price... it's cheeep for a full engine with tranny.

But then again some people have taken advantage of the obsession with JDM and just slapped JDM on it to sell product... like JDM taillights or clear corners etc. That's just ghey. JDM doesn't always mean better... it means what it says it means... from Japan.

Well most people don't expect a high performance engine to last as long as a normal Toyota/Nissan/Honda engine would due to the flogging and added stress though.

Kokomo - nice explanation, thanks

Well people aren't buying them for reliability. They're already well built engines so if you take care of them they'll still do fine. Like Kokomo explained, I'll be getting a vairant that wasn't offered in the US cheap with relatively low mileage (under 35k).

When I hear the word JDM I think of the Ford tuner, weird hearing that about imports
