Try Sunny Day Real Estate, they are old school emo and don't suck ass. Most emo nowadays is just following the times, and it's more about image than the actual music itself. Bunch of extremely whiney people who try to sound deep and dress up in the new pop punk fashion.

Nope. Tried the first 3 tracks and couldnt cut it. Listening to a mix of U2 and Slipknot to purge the nasty emo from my skull.

I've heard From Autumn to Ashes be called "emo-core" before.... they're really really good though :) especially if you like metal or bands such as Zao, Living Sacrifice, Poison the Well, etc. Think hardcore or punk with a much much heavier sound, almost death metal, but with less violence and more angst :)

I read the description of this genre for the first time in this thread, and the song that came to mind almost immediately was:
Perfect Lyrics

Hey dad look at me.
Think back and talk to me
Did I grow up according to plan?
And do you think I'm wasting my time...
Doing things I wanna do
But it hurts when you disapprove all along.

And now I try hard to make it
I just want to make you proud
I'm never gonna be good enough for you
I can't pretend that I'm alright
And you can't change me

Cuz we lost it all
Nothing lasts forever
I'm sorry I can't be perfect
Now it's just too late
And we can't go back
I'm sorry I can't be perfect

I try not to think
About the pain I feel inside
Did you know you used to be my hero?
All the days you spent with me
Now seem so far away
And it feels like you don't care anymore

And now I try hard to make it
I just want to make you proud
I'm never gonna be good enough for you
I can't stand another fight
And nothing's alright

Cuz we lost it all
Nothing lasts forever
I'm sorry I can't be perfect
Now it's just too late
And we can't go back
I'm sorry I can't be perfect

Nothing's gonna change the things that you said
Nothing's gonna make this right again
Please don't turn your back
I can't believe it's hard just to talk to you
But you don't understand

Cuz we lost it all
Nothing lasts forever
I'm sorry I can't be perfect
Now it's just too late
And we can't go back
I'm sorry I can't be perfect

Cuz we lost it all
Nothing lasts forever
I'm sorry I can't be perfect
Now it's just too late
And we can't go back
I'm sorry I can't be perfect

I just threw in some Mellencamp into the mix.
See, I love music. I mean, its my passion. So when I say I dont like a particular genre its really sayin something for me. Cause I can usually find a few something in about every genre there is. But theres simply nothing about emo, not 1 little itty bitty thing I have found thus far I like. I respect the artists in the sense that their musicians, buts thats as far as it goes.
Course, by the same token some of what I like other dont so I dont pretend to preach gospel here or anything, but me personally? It aint gonna be played on my radio.

emo bands: the get up kids, jimmy eat world, weezer (pinkerton album), dashboard confessional, saves the day, those are some of the big ones.

emo is basically sad (some say whiny) pop/punk/rock music

Nope, I couldnt name a band. Why? What I HAVE heard majorly sucks ass. And I've heard more then then just one song trust me. My friends studio has recorded for emo bands while I was there.
I've heard it and it sucks.

$10 says your friend has never recorded one good band, let alone one good emo band. the sad fact is 9 out of 10 bands suck, no matter the genre, and the incidence of suckiness is even higher for independent bands than for major-label bands, which is pretty scary. given that most emo bands are also indie bands, it's basically a given that any local emo band you've heard will suck donkey balls, not because they are emo, but because they just suck.

but all that is moot because anyone who listens to U2 and slipknot automatically forfits all rights to make musical judgments. sad, cause i thought liking tool meant you were ok. BTW, there are "emo" bands that will tear slipknot a new hole. play yourself some blood brothers, if you think you can handle the rock. they don't need stupid masks or fake names to be extreme, because they're the real deal.

regarding Sunny Day: they're not old school. they're the first popular band from the current (but dying) wave. but emo goes back to the 1980's in the hardcore punk scene. jawbreaker is old school. the replacement wave is split between the post-punk acts like thursday, cursive, the blood brothers, etc, and the watered-down pop acts like all-american-rejects, newer dashboard, something corporate, etc.

yay!

Ummm...Ok. Cause your right. U2 isnt one of the most influential bands in the history of music or anything.....
Anyways, I'll agree the band with them does.....well......suck. But to me its as much being that I hate the music type as the band itself. Emo just ISNT my thing, much like a thug doesnt listen to much country.

Damnit, cant find Blood Brothers in Rhapsody.
See, it isnt that I'm not TRYING to like it, its just everything up till now has been suck.

Best emo songs EVAR:

The Get Up Kids - Mass Pike
The Promise Ring - Emergency! Emergency!
Thursday - Jet Black New Year
Taking Back Sunday - Timberwolves at New Jersey
Jimmy Eat World - Just Watch the Fireworks
Brand New - Sic Transit Gloria... Glory Fades
The Benjamins - 3,720 to 1
The Early November - I Want To Hear You Sad

I would not consider Yellowcard or the Starting Line to be emo. Pop punk is more appropriate, but emo, pop punk, indy, and hardcore all have a similar "scene".

Much like Electronic. Its ridiculous actually how many different genres there are any more. Its almost to the point people want to be in a different genre just to start some kind of trend. Most emo just reminds me of punk it some flavor or another. But, the "scene" break downs exist in all types of music so.......
Classification is stereotyping. Its all just music man. :D

Honestly, I dont know how you could rule out the whole genre if you listen to rock. EMO encompasses such a large group of diverse bands that you'd have to be able to find one you like.

If you only listened to hip/hop and country or something then maybe I'd understand :p

Honestly, same reason people rule out Electronic as anything they would like after hearing Paul Oakenfold and Sasha Digweed, but never hearing Lords of Acid.
As an example. Thursday is not like the Emo I have heard. I kinda like Thursday.

So many misinformed or bandwagon fans think the current garbage they listen to is true 'emo', aka jimmy eat world, thursday, dashboard confessionial the likes. Emo truly stands for 'emotionial hardcore' is is quite an older genre than most beleive. Rites Of Spring are really thought to be the true 'founders' of emo (band that was on the Dischord label for quite a few years). I liked it in it's infancy, but 99% of what's labeled emo now adays is pure garbage. On a funny not, a week ago best buy had a section of it's cd ad displaying 'emo' titles. I hadn't laughed so hard in years.

Hell the fact Emo guys themselves cant even agree on the bands to be defined by the genre are reason enough for me to say it.

Genres suck. Good music is good music whatever you call it. Similarly, crap is crap no matter how you try to dress it up and give it a catchy name.

Emo is good stuff. I'm a big fan of The Juliana Theory, Thursday, and Sunny Day Real Estate. To me emo is like modern day Morrissey.
