And another thing, wasn't the Camino a body on frame design? This thing is going to be unit based. Hell, big as the Pilot is, it STILL only has a 3,500 lb towing capacity. This thing is going to SUCK if they build it

On top?? I think that the Murano spanks both the Pilot and the Highlander...at least in looks and powertrain. I was kinda put off by the Murano's rear-end, but after seeing it in person, I think it's GORGEOUS :D As for cargo space, it has a much as a Highlander and a bit less than the Pilot.

As NFS4 posted last week, pickups are the one of the most popular categories of cars right now, and Honda is just trying to get a little percentage of that market as cheaply as possible. Pickups outsell all sedans now, which is where Honda obviously excells with the Accord. Now that they have a small SUV (CR-V), mid-sized (Pilot), luxury (MDX), and one targeted at 20-30 year olds with no jobs (Element), they think that it is time to expand into another market. They've been successful everywhere else, so why not trucks too? :)

Of course I agree with everyone else, that a car based pickup is sort of strange, especially if it potentially is available in front wheel drive!

What's wrong with car based stuff? It's a good way to make people think they are macho while being a little more safe for us guys with small cars. They still pollute as much as real SUVs though, because they can.

because its just a marketing term, those things are really station wagons. and if theres going to be gov't fuel-consumption standards for "SUVs" then an "SUV" better not be whatever an automaker decides to call an "SUV" (like a pt cruiser)

You whole polution thing is BS. Even the Chevy Suburban classifies as a LEV (low emissions vehicle). And car based SUV's get better gas mileage than equivalent truck-based SUV's 9/10 times...mainly due to the fact that they use car-based engines and have a lighter car-based unibody instead of a heavy frame.

As to a pickup. Pickups are used a lot for towing a hauling stuff. A car based one isn't gonna cut it. If you need a light duty truck, you have the Tacoma, Ranger, Frontier, Colorado, etc. They will r@pe ANY attempt that Honda tries to make.

and thats my problem with gov't mandated fuel-consumption decreases, is that they'll probably be able to sneak a pt cruiser (which is clearly a car) into the "SUV" lineup and then not do anything with the truck based body-on-frame model. heck, toyota advertises the corolla wagon (re-dubbed "matrix") as a "sport utility rocket"

Pollution thing aside... pickups are bought by people who do real work with them majority of the time. SUVs are mostly for soccer moms and other people that don't use the space 90% of the time. Heck, the "mid-size" and "compact" SUVs out there can't really haul diddly squat. A Ford Escape has only room for 2 people and ski equipment... a friggin wagon has more utility than that.

The main thing that irks me about the existence of car-based SUVs (rather SUVs in general) is that dumb people drive them like sports sedans or cars causing more fatal accidents and more accidents in general. So the knock isn't the cars themselves but the dumb@$$ people that don't know how to drive them properly. That being said... Honda has no clue how to make trucks... yet. Mebbe they'll fail miserably and then build from there... or just quit and stick to making cars they know how to make well.

1) An Escape can carry FIVE people and ski equipment. All of the ski gear goes in the cargo area (jacket's, poles, boots, etc) and the skis go on the roof rack, DUH! :p
2) Where's your evidence on SUV drivers driving cars like sports sedans? I'd like to see some hard numbers. That's being said, "SOME" car-based SUV's can outhandle many cars on the road. SUV's like the BMW X5, Infiniti FX45, and Nissan Murano can whip many cars to shame in braking, handling, and acceleration. Hell, even our Highlander handles, accelerates, and brakes harder than my '95 Camry LE. It hauls a hell of alot more as well.

I'd be willing to bet that 75% of all pickup owners do not utilize their pickup bed on a weekly basis.

eh buncha whiners. atleast it'll probably get decent mileage. most people use their trucks to haul furniture, not loads of concrete. just like most people use their giant suvs to commute to offices and don't go over giant rocks in canyons.
