3rd cousin is ok, i dunno about 2nd cousin though. maybe.... if she was really hot. lol. But really tho a 2nd cousin means you share one of the same great-grandparents. and 3rd cousin one of the same great-great-grandparents.

PlatinumGold - did you and your wife know you were distantly related when you started dating?

to be more specific.

koreans are ANAL about their geneologies. my dad and her dad both know their geneologies back about 20 generations or so.

my grandfather 20 times removed = her grandfather 17 times removed, so 4th or 5th is probably not accurate. ;)

but in korean terms, the fact that we are both of the same tribe means it would be illegal for us to be married, to this day relatives on her side don't know that we are of the same "tribe".

Oh wow, that's distant. I never realized you were Korean. How did you make the connection? Just looking at family trees one day?

we know which "tribe" we are based on the spelling of our family names. then we looked at the geneology charts (actually volumes)

Interesting. It seems strange that her family wouldn't figure it out, but oh well. :) I wish I came from a culture that cared about our ancestors. I couldn't trace my geneology past my great-grandparents. :(
Edit: err... great-great grandparents, I'm sure my grandparents know who their grandparents were. :)

Haha, considering the size and scope of my family, it would be difficult for me NOT to end up dating a second/third cousin once/twice/thrice removed - my grandma had 15 kids (back in the mid thirties through the late forties), my grandma was one of seven siblings in her own family. From my grandma alone I have something like 60-70 cousins, go one generation up and I think the number goes up to like 300 or 400.

I've met some really cute girls at family reunions...

Heh, what's worse is when you go to a family reunion and you end up meeting one of those girls that are really hot, and you stare at them for a few seconds, stammering, before someone (inevitably one of your aunts or your great-aunts/grandmas) introduces you and you find out you're closer in relation than you thought.

One of my cousins(2nd) is considered to be one of the hottest girls in school, known her since I was 5.

I met one of my second cousins about two months ago, girl's 16 years old but really cute; said hi to her, shook her hand, the entire time in my head "stop checking her out, BAD Nate!"

For some reason my mom thought it was hilarious. I guess I have that kind of family.

Recessive genes coding for some bad characteristics may be passed from one generation to the next without any significant consequence. However, when individuals within the same family mate, the chance of both parents passing the recessive genes to their offsprings increase significantly. Many diseases can manifest this way. That's why incest is a big no-no. Mating between 2nd cousins are ok from a biological and legal standpoint.

In the old days, cousins married all the time. Looking at the history of Europe, you will find many lines of royalty where they marry within the family (cousins). Also a very good way to see some freaky genetic disorders!

You are allowed to marry your first cousin even in some states. And not just like Kentucky, New Jersry is one of them.

That explains a lot.
