While it may be gross, there's little chance that their offspring would be mutants.

ummm, your post says: " he hooked up with another girl that is his 2nd/3rd cousin"

but your title says: "guy breaks up with one of my classmates to date his cousin?"

wtf? is the guy dating HIS cousin? or is the girl dating his cousin? or is the guy dating the girls cousin? I'm confused

"WTF, guy breaks up with one of my classmates to date his cousin?"

From your title, I thought it was a gay thread about a guy who broke up with another guy to date his guy cousin. LOL.

2nd or 3rd cousin is niether prohibited by law nor genetically likely to produce defects, I don't see the problem with it. Most of the human race has probably decended from closer inbreeding than that if you take a look at a lot of European cultures prior to modern day, and there is some sound logic behind it as far as keeping a single bloodline free from impurities as long as they cull the defectives. That said, I don't think I'd be able to make it with my cousins because of the social stigmas I've grown up with, it just seems gross.

i have seen people dating 3rd & 4th cousins a lot...

1st or 2nd is a "no-no".

It's not illegal if its the 2nd cousin or furthur. The world wouldn't have existed if humans hadn't inbred, but there are enough humans now to be able to have relationships with both parties being non-related.

A surprising number of people don't even understand what 2nd/3rd cousin or once/twice removed means. You're saying they share the same great-grandparents or great-great-grandparents?

PlatinumGold - did you and your wife know you were distantly related when you started dating?

to be more specific.

koreans are ANAL about their geneologies. my dad and her dad both know their geneologies back about 20 generations or so.

my grandfather 20 times removed = her grandfather 17 times removed, so 4th or 5th is probably not accurate. ;)

but in korean terms, the fact that we are both of the same tribe means it would be illegal for us to be married, to this day relatives on her side don't know that we are of the same "tribe".
