Is that what they are asking?
Sounds to me like they are looking for search results that are not tied to any one user so they can see if their position holds any water.
If it's not personally identifiable, it cannot help their case which has to do with minors' access to porn.

Either way, I don't even care for them having the statistics. It's one of those things where it's best to err on the side of cation.

Sure it can, they are looking to see how much pr0n gets delivered from search results.
You do realize your scenario above would require more court orders to determine who had what IP at a given time? I doubt the govt has the time nor energy to bother with something as mundane as what you are suggesting.
Nope, ISPs are already being told that to investigate "terrorism", their records must be accessible by the FBI w/o a warrant. It's been discussed here only a couple of weeks ago.

If your ISP hands out that information without a suponea, I suggest getting a new ISP.

The president signed the bill about a month ago, requiring all ISPs including academic ones, to restructure their data systems to give FBI warrantless monitoring capabilities.

I'd like to see a link to that considering that is pretty broad.

They *are* looking for statistics, it says so right there in this news story and every other one. They are looking for data about how often pornography shows up in web searches in preparation to try and defend that P.O.S. that is the C.O.P.A. Bush does not want to come to your house and ask why you seem to be so intrigued with "12-toed chicks with d1cks," so you can rest easy.

Outrage is the appropriate reaction to this, but at least try to focus a bit more on the real issue, ffs. It doesn't take much to get you spun up into a raving tizzy anymore, does it?

Your confidence in a government who wishes to wiretap without warrant, and to keep it hushed is ill founded. Why on earth do you believe what they say? I havent seen one good reason for it.

What information is in "all web searches"? What is it they really want?

My trust in Uncle Sam is very very small.

Statements which are both poetic and accurate, yet have nothing to do with the current thread of conversation.

Unless, you share in dahunan's "ZOMG! THE GOVERNMENT WANTS TO KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE!" panic?

Yes, this is a potential slippery-slope power-grab that we much watch closely and prevent from being granted. Yes, this could lead to severe first-amendment rights breachings. Yes, jumping ahead 10 steps and typing all in caps like a madman about the government tracking you down is a very quick way to get you branded as a paranoid lunatic and have your very real issue dismissed as nothing but the raving of a madman.

It does more harm than good for the cause. It plays right into their hands. They are not stupid.

Edit: These kind of threads always amuse me, because as much as the Repubs claim to distrust government and want smaller government, they're always happy to turn over their privacy to government whenever the government tells them its for their own safety. They're the first to say, "If you've done nothing wrong, you have nothing to fear from intrusive government searches."

How will an isp tell them if a minor is using the computer? Unless you think the government is going to bother going through all the records, determine which households have minors that use the internet, match those up, contact the individual to find out when their children are using the computer, etc. I don't see anything in that article to suggest they would connect searches to isp adresses. However, I agree that the government doesn't need this data, and should conduct their own study to get what they need which will be far cheaper than going through the court to try to get a businessess to give away data they don't want to disclose about something not pertaining to current laws.

I have no confidence in the government proper, and anyone who does is a fool. What I do have confidence in is the American people. This includes the blue-collar workers, the keyboard jockies, the press, the faux intellectuals, the real intellectuals, the voters, the couch potatoes, the American Idol voters, the campaign volunteers, the protestors, etc. These institutions are what keep power-grabs in check. These are the ones in control. These are the ones who make a difference. The people who write their reps, expressing their opinions on these issues (has anyone here already done so?) The people who post opinions, backed by logic, reason, and research.

No, you've mistaken where my allegiance lies. It lies with my country as a whole, not its individual leaders.

I promise there is nothing sarcastic or rude about this question.. it is a bit tinfoilish <new word.. I just made it up :)

What if it was proven, say 20 years from now, that the Diebold machines were hacked to give bush and cheney the Presidency..

Would you still have faith in the "people" of America?

Of course. If you do not, what is stopping you from putting a a gun to your head right now? I mean, if no one can be trusted and we are all doomed no matter what we do, why do you go on, if not because of some faith?

Besides, if it were "proven" 20 years from now, that would mean that someone was working to expose the truth, no? Would you abandon those truth-seekers now, just because of their tardiness?

Nah.. never abandon the truth seekers.. but why should people have so much power that they can cover the truth for so long..

Luckily Google is the type of company that would go to war with the US government in the courts.

I'm not worried about anything except the US government making asses out of themselves, again.

No you don't have to do that for google. But it did say OTHER search engines already gave up the info.
