WTF? Glass cutting board exploded in my kitchen

NFS4

No Lifer
So I leave this morning to take my fiance to work. I get a roll from last night out of a plastic bag and head to the car.

I come back to the house and walk into my room -- but I hear this clicking sound coming from the kitchen. I walk back into the kitchen and see glass all over the floor and pieces shooting out from what's left on the counter. It's almost like it expanded outward and exploded into tiny pieces.

There was nothing on top of it, and it wasn't sitting near the burners (after the explosion, however, the pieces expanded out to reach the burner).

WTH would cause this?

ninjas are trying to kill you...but they did you a favor. glass cutting boards are the devil to knives, even shitty knives.

replace it with a plastic or wooden board on the cheap from wal mart or target or something.

Was the board moved or did you put it down? I'm guessing there was a small crack in it and something triggered it (cold perhaps?) to expand to all the smaller cracks that are inherent to any cutting board. Use wood next time (It would match the cabinets!)

That's a piece of tempered safety glass. Tempered glass is made is such a way that when it fails it breaks into little rounded pieces so it's far less of a danger. The way it's made puts a whole lot of internal stress on it. Wear and tear create small cracks in it. In you case what happened is that the small defect "unzipped" due to vibration, temperature changes, whatever.

Think of it as a balloon blown all the way up. All it takes is a small cut and it pops. Same with the glass.

I've got new wood cutting boards still in the package. I'm waiting to use them in our new house once we move in May 1. The house I'm in right now is a rental so I don't really care about matching 🙂

This cutting board has been here ever since I've lived in this house (about 5 years or so). And no, it wasn't recently moved or pushed down on. It was just sitting there.

Yeah, in a sense it is probably a good thing it broke - do not use glass cutting boards.

As others mentioned the glass can get crazing in it from where an utensil may have scored the glass and after time it lost integrity.

We had a glass cutting board that exploded after we set a hot pot on it.

Which was fine by me... I didn't like it anyway. 🙂

Taking X on your way to work? Shame, shame.

That's wild ... my glass cutting board (that we don't really use) ... has contact paper on the back, so I guess it if broke it wouldn't shit all over the kitchen.

glass is bad for knives, ditch it!

That's what you get for using something as unsuitable as glass for your cutting surface.

It isn't mine. It's my roommates. I use a small wood cutting board personally.

yep. tempered glass can behave strangely. It's kinda badass actually.

I lived in Oklahoma for a while. Most everyone there has a storm door with tempered glass.
If you seal the door up tight (no air flow) and the door faces the sun, it's not uncommon to come home to a blown out door.
The sun heats up the air behind the tempered glass and as it expands out it breaks the glass.

Did you check your fridge for Zuul?

That's eggs silly. He should be checking to see if they really did move the bodies of the cemetary they built the subdivision over and not just the headstones.

First thing I'd do is take pics and make a thread about it on ATOT.

Oh wait, he did! 🙂

But why do you have a glass cutting board? I can't for the life of me figure out why I'd want the risk of glass shattering while I'm chopping something. You're lucky that didn't shatter while you were cutting something on it. (Or your fiancee)
