Your quotes of $400-1200 for a tasting menu are way higher than the actual prices. The tasting menu at The French Laundry is $240, and almost all other restaurants are cheaper than that. Of course wine can increase the price, but probably not to $1200.

yes I'm thinking with wine not just food.

plus let me add that most tasting menus have options to "upgrade" portions of the meal so that $240 number isn't always accurate add tax and tip and tell me where you are.
