WASHINGTON (AP) ? Nearly seven in 10 Americans believe it is likely that ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein was personally involved in the Sept. 11 attacks, says a poll out almost two years after the terrorists' strike against this country.
Sixty-nine percent in a Washington Post poll published Saturday said they believe it is likely the Iraqi leader was personally involved in the attacks carried out by al-Qaeda. A majority of Democrats, Republicans and independents believe it's likely Saddam was involved.

The belief in the connection persists even though there has been no proof of a link between the two.

President Bush and members of his administration suggested a link between the two in the months before the war in Iraq. Claims of possible links have never been proven, however.

isnt it time that facts start to catch up with fiction?

Well it's time to get the message out to the contray then. There certainly has been no links other than Bush decieving using Saddam, 9-11, Osama, and Iraq in the same well crafted sentences during SOTU speech and others.

I'm an American and I'm in the 30% (or so the poll alleges) that does not beleive Saddam Hussein had anything to do with the September 11 incident. It boggles my mind that so many people are so ignorant of world affairs.

Many people don't believe something because it's true. They believe something because they are comfortable believing it. (ie bin Laden = Arab, Saddam = Arab, they must be in league!)

probably randomly selected people like it is with all polls

It is the media that is responsible for this. They pander to the Bush administration by publishing stories that repeat half-truths, speculation and out-right lies and then do little to put out accurate information after the fact.

The Post poll of 1,003 adults was taken Aug. 7-11 and has a margin of error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.

I don't think polls like this would just be of one neighborhood or geographical area. That would be stupid.

Actually it appears the keyword "likely" is what got numbers this high. At this point the strength of the connection between Saddam and Al Queda is not certain. Al Queda camps were destroyed in Iraq and Senior al queda members have been picked up in iraq. This is probably enough to leave lingering questions in peoples mind.

But to be truly honest, you can't prove that Saddam WASNT responsible or linked with 9/11 and that really should be sufficient.

The latest Washington Post poll is based on telephone interviews with 1,003 randomly selected adults nationwide, and was conducted Aug. 7-11, 2003.

Sounds like the same reasoning for Iraq's WMD program.

It would seem unlikely that she was involved since there have been no reports of senior al queda being captured in your mom kitchen.

We have captured senior Al Qaeda in Germany, France, Britian, Pakistan, Indonesia, Thailand, Jordan, etc. They are all in on it as well unless they can prove otherwise.

Oh yes, don't forget the AL Qaeda captured in the US, we must be in on it as well. Can't prove otherwise.

Unlikely yes, but then again unlikely does not equal proven.

Look at the bottom of the page I linked to a few posts up...correlate the findings from years ago with the reports of senior AQ being captured in Iraq. 😉

No, I should probably go turn myself into homeland security.
