WTF? 2 copies of Blu-Ray movie don't work

I just got a DVD that had sand in the sleeve, yes freaking sand. What kind of asshole does that crap? I just upgraded to BR so it should be my last DVD from them.

I had a movie that wasn't recognized in my PS3, can't remember which one, but I left the disc in the drive, pulled the power cord to the PS3, put it back in, hit the button PS button on the controller, and bam both the real version and digital version showed up immediately. Weird stuff

Free stuff is cheaper than stuff you have to pay for.

Interesting - I thought it was just my luck, and not indicative of a BR specific issue. Proportionally (unplayable vs total # Netflix rented) , I've had a much higher rate of cracked BR discs than DVDs.

Yea, because the antiscratch actually makes them easier to crack.

I had issues with a lot of BR from Netflix in short period. The small edge fracture was always the culprit. There was speculation the mail sorting equipment was bending the disks and that it was causing the crack. Never followed up to see if that was the case.

I had the same issue with Netflix and the PS3... I would say less than half of the BluRay disks I got actually played... but they all had a crack on the outer edge. Something about the USPS mail sorters bends the disk and it eventually develops a crack on the edge... sucks too, because that is one of the reasons I bought a PS3 in the first place. I may be crazy, but regular DVD's on the right TV(plasma in my case) look pretty damn good. Not BluRay good, but close enough... I cancelled the service, as they have no solution to the problem, and given the USPS's financial troubles, it will likely only get worse for Netflix.

I've had one blu-ray that didn't play properly from Netflix in about 3 years of renting them so my experience doesn't agree with them being "notorious" for bad discs. I have had a few with stupid BD-Live features that required a firmware update.

The stickers they put on the hub now do seem to help to stop disc cracking, before they did that I'd gotten a couple of DVDs that arrived cracked.

Judging by the hundreds of comments on the article I posted, and a few postings here, seems like you are insanely lucky.

I've never had a problem with a disc not playing and I've watched a hell of a lot of Blu-rays. I have received a couple of broken discs though.

3rd copy came today and I put it in the PS3 to test and it does see it this time. hopefully it plays.

did you notice if the previous disc had those cracks on the outside? I'm curious. I've had problems before, but don't think I noticed the cracks. Never think to look, though.

Also, to echo what others have said: I've received plenty of cracked blu-rays from Netflix. I wont go so far as to say its epidemic, but it is irritating.

I've had a tons of Blu-Rays from Netflix and only one disc that wouldn't play on my PS3: a copy of Terminator 2. It looked fine but I didn't inspect the edge. The replacement copy played fine. I live pretty close to the distribution center, so maybe they don't get banged up as badly in the short transit.

i forgot to look before I put it in the envelope. I did a check for scratches and prints and stuff like that. Unless there were hairline cracks, I didn't notice any.

I don't think I've had a cracked blu-ray yet. I've had several cracked DVDs and at least 2 that were completely cracked in half.

Netflix is notorious for damaged Blu-rays. Its not because they are scratched though, they are getting cracked in the mail.

Take a VERY close look at the outer edge of the disc. You will probably see a small crack somewhere.

The anti scratch coating on Blu-rays does nothing to prevent them from cracking like this.

Found an article with a picture http://marsbox.com/blog/news/cracked-netflix-blu-ray-disc-problem/

This! I have had about 4/15 BD's from Netflix show up cracked around the edge of the disc.
