I did see some missiles that he was jumping on, but I think I missed the super crazy stage. I am scared to play it now though. :D

This isn't one with missiles, but this is the one that constantly moves upward: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q2MTHQEDjfM&t=17m14s .

I also made a few of the stages harder than they needed to be because there are secret collectables in some stages, and getting them can be quite arduous at times. I remember this one being in a stage with three spinning laser beams of doom, and after jumping down to get the item, you had to do a quick jump backwards to get back on a ledge and jump forward or the laser would hit you. What makes it even harder is that you need to enter with as much time as possible or else you'll get hit, so you have to stand right before where the spinning laser hits the hallway before that section.

Wow, I would happily take Giana Sisters and Guacamelee! That would be amazing. :awe: I should really play closer attention to those Humble Bundles, I am missing out on some cool stuff.

I think I just need an e-mail address to put in on the Humble Bundle site, and it will send you a redemption URL. Since the games came individually, there will probably be multiple URLs.

Yeah, I'll normally buy the Humble Bundle as long as a game or two is interesting and the price is good. If I own the games, I'll normally just buy one as a giftable bundle and send it to myself.

That does look way harder, but as long as the controls are ok, it seems doable. Once I get through these other games I think I will give that one a shot. Every time I watch a clip of it, it really makes me want to play the game. Of course I will probably be back here three days later saying how irritated I am with the game. :D

YHPM :)

I love Kid Icarus!

KT

that era of NES games has such a unique love/hate relationship with the player. Doubt it can be duplicated--I think part of it has to do with overcoming relatively shitty controls to succeed, and no one is trying to make shitty response gamepads or game control these days (intentionally, anyway).

It is amazing how time can wash away the crappiness of some of the old games and the poor controls they had. Maybe that is why I have been addicted to AVGN recently and watching all of the crappy games I forgot about, need to smash the illusion! Of course Kid Icarus is one I still remember fondly and I probably will until the day I play it again which will likely never happen.

So got Giana Sisters, Giacamelee (thanks to Aikouka for both!), plus purchased Vessel and UnEpic.

I've tried the first three and Vessel is by far the best of the bunch so far. Beautiful game and very cool puzzles that are intuitive, but not super easy either. Love it. Giana Sisters would be second; like it a lot and it is much easier with a controller. Guacamelee is funny and it looks cool, I just do not like the combat very much; maybe it get better later.

Going to try UnEpic this weekend.

Thanks again for all of the recs!

If you are feeling like a man, you could try I Wanna Be the Boshy. That will make you ragequit pretty quickly.

LMAO. Man I tried to play that game once...it didn't take me long to decide I had better less frustrating ways to spend my time...and I play LoL. :D

That game is just..insane. Watched a playthru, wow.

Have fun! UnEpic is a great game. Also, you may want to consider checking out the Angry Video Game Nerd Adventures. It's a tough but fun old school platformer.

Thanks, I will look at that one.

UnEpic is fantastic! I've only played about an hour or so, but I love it. Tonnes of fun and I can't wait to play it some more!

Did OP consider just getting an emulator to play those old games he was watching?

Otherwise, these are great choices and I'll have to get some myself as I just don't want to play some crazy heavily immersive type game sometimes. I just want a simple thing I can pick up and just button mash/enjoy.

The Swapper and Capsized are modernized platformers.

Maybe a little to cutsie but Toki Tori 2+ might be up your alley.

Considered, but not something I ultimately want to bother with.

I remember The Swapper. Have not played it, but it does look interesting. Capsized looks awesome, thanks. Will keep that one in the back pocket for when I get through these other ones.

Toki Tori 2+ actually looks nice, but after watching about 15 minutes of game play, not sure it is something I would enjoy for the entire game. Had fun watching the guy play and figure it out though. :)

Ok here ya go Keith, Castle Crashers, Rayman:Legends, Mickey Mouse:Castle of Illusion, Ducktales.

And as a sleeper hit, don't miss Darksiders 2

Downloaded the Castle Crashers demo, thanks! I own the first Darksiders, but I have not tried it yet; I'll give that a shot first. I'll have to skip the Mickey game because I find that mouse extremely obnoxious; not a fan. Forgot about the new Rayman; I liked Origins, so thanks for the reminder.

By the way Giana Sisters is amazing. Just blasted through about 5 more levels and I want to keep playing. Really loving it and I now have the soundtrack completely stuck in my head. :D

KT

Edit: forgot to mention Ducktales; definitely going to grab that once I get through these first few I am playing.

Sega: Hell Yeah! (has some Metroidvania elements to it but mostly you complete the stage and don't have reason to revisit. Prettiest game on my list here and some stages have excellent music, about half of which is available free to download on the dev homepage and also on Sega's page).

Konami: Rocket Knight (they made 2 games for Genesis/SNES around '93 and '94 and the series had been abandoned until this game released in 2010). Should be able to beat the game in about 3 hours, after that some extra stuff is unlocked. I put about 10 hours into it

Capcom: Strider. This was just released a few weeks ago. Original game came came out around '89 and was very much an arcade game but this one has heavy Metroidvania influences. I put around 15 hours into it.

indie: Intrusion 2. Single player contra-like game. Challenging. I put about 11 hours into it

Here are others but I haven't played them: Bionic Commando Rearmed, Dungeons & Dragons Chronicles of Mystara, Sacred Citadel, Double Dragon Neon, Castlevania Lords of Shadow Mirror of Fate, Rainblood Chronicles Mirage, Mercenary Kings

Hell Yeah looks pretty cool. It's hard to tell because I can't seem to find any gameplay videos without some moron's head in the top corner and him blathering over all of the music and whatnot. So obnoxious.

Rocket Knight looks fantastic; thanks for that one. Added to my list.

I have the new Strider on PS4. I loved the original Genesis game, but for some reason I am finding this new version extremely hard, so I never really feel like going back to it. I will at some point.

Hmm, you get to ride a wolf in Intrusion 2; I like that idea! :D I was never the biggest Contra guy growing up, but this looks ok. I'd like to try a demo first.

I look into the rest when I have a bit more time, thanks.

If you like Castle Crashers, I have an extra copy I can gift you. :)

Cool, thanks! I was going to try it last night, but got stuck on Rochard. I will try to give it a go tonight and see what I think. Appreciate the offer. :)

Played Castle Crashers last night. It's quite the button masher! Pretty fun though, I bet it's super fun in multiplayer too. The graphics are awesomely cartoonish; very fun.
