WRX vs Altima

Both are new, fairly high performance sporty sedans. Base price, stick for stick, of a V6 Altima is 1K less than the WRX so the price category is the same. One is bigger but slower than the other. And you get AWD on one of them.

In the past I've never really considered getting a subaru. This girl I was dating a while back drove an '86 or so subaru wagon and that car was so crappy it might have as well have been milled out of dried feces. Leaked oil and coolant like a pig and whenever climbing a hill, you had to run the heater to keep it from overheating.

That being said I just checked out carpoint and subaru seemed to really cleaned up it's act on the legacy series. So that probably bodes well for the WRX. The Altima, is well a Nissan so they have a pretty good rep.

I voted for WRX mainly because of its speed and AWD but if I were to buy, I'd probably buy the Altima as it is a bigger car. WRX is just too small for my liking.

there is no question... one is a family sedan enhanced to be sporty, the other is a sports car that just so hapens to come in a four door model (and a wagon for that matter) the wrx is a driving experience... beats the altima hands down...

I'd rather have the Altima. B/C I don't want to hear people whining when they ride in the back seat. And while the Altima's interior isn't top-notch, it's better than the WRX's. But it's a larger vehicle, with more cargo capacity, and a better exterior design. The WRX is just ass ugly, especially with the bug eyes, blunt/plain rear end, and rice wing on the back. And the Altima is WICKED fast for its size, and I'd take the Altima's six over the turbo four in the WRX anyday.

Considering that the U.S. isn't a rally circuit and that I spend most of my time in either city traffic or on long stretches of highway, the WRX is nothing more than a utter annoyance IMHO.

My initial list: Maxima, Altima, Supercharged GTP, WRX.

I'll have some pics up early next week with my new 2002 GTP, high polished rims, leather, power sunroof with all options available!!!!!!!

WRX<--but ugly, but gotta love AWD

Altima's pretty sweet car, I love the new look, bigger, but dealerships arn't budging much on price, I was able to haggle them for a 2002 Altima SE with power sunroof and the usual stuff for $3000 off msrp price.

Bite me if I chose a domestic over Nissan 😀

Altima. They are the same in terms of speed. yes WRX has AWD but you don't really need it most of the time, and the Altima is bigger.

I'd take the WRX. The beauty of all wheel drive. Prefer a canyon carver vs. a family sedan any day.

I happen to like the looks of the WRX, though I would change out the headlights and get mine w/o the spoiler. Otherwise, it's a sharp lookin car. Not to mention that getting 300HP out of that bad boy isn't too difficult.

WRX is not ugly........ALtima isn't exactly a good looking car either....so no one wins in this case.
You want to see an ugly car go look at the aztek, lumina, impala...etc.

The WRX shouldn't suffer from mechanical problems....it was built with WRC competition in mind so its proven to be a tough car.
I'd vote for the WRX only because of the 4-wheel drive. Altima's 240hp driving the front wheels seems ridiculous.....rear-wheel drive is what it should be.

<< WRX. No question. It's a rally proven car and looks damn cool. >>

Dirt != pavement

In everyday situations, the Altima is the much more practical vehicle. Unless you're drive to work includes a race track and a dirt course along the way the WRX holds no fundamental advantage over the Altima...

Just don't go out trying to be a rally driver on the streets. Read too many stories of people that bought WRX's and wrecked them within the first month or two of ownership. They're not used to the way AWD cars handle, decide to go push the limits of the car, and end up sending it into a ditch.

For normal people this is true. For "enthusiasts" that like to take offramps at speeds above the reccomended limit, this is not true.. or take the car to the autocross course on the weekend, or doesn't like the steering wheel being yanked from their hands due to torque steer in a FWD car when the punch it at a stop light, or prefer the additional safety afforded by an AWD system.

go test drive both and if you still cant make up your mind.. then come back and we'll tell you to buy the subbie.

WRX ALL THE WAY!!

It's funny how people buy car for non practical reasons. Why do you need a 4WD SMALL car? Do you rally to work every day? Do you race with anybody you see on the road? If it is a SUV, I can understand, you may want the room, but the WRX is pea size small not to mention those bug eyes and the price of such a little car!

If you can't handle off the line torque steer then you don't need to be driving. And I highly doubt that a person that buys an Altima will be gunning it from stoplight to stoplight on the way to work or to the grocery store.

Subaru is just cashing in on American's fondness for the "halo car" they couldn't have for all of these years. In the U.S., the WRX is really not a practical machine by any means considering it's price and what other vehicles you can get for that price. I'm surprised they even brought it over here at all, but I guess that American's will by anything based on emotions.

like I said, only nonpractical people drives the WRX...the paragraph above pretty much sums up why there are so many accidents that can actually be avoided...people with a false sense of security goes off to test their vehicle's safety limits...

And there you have it. They're two very different cars aimed at two very different types of people.

But why is it not pracitcal? Because it's small? Does everyone need a 19ft long SUV w/ a 34ft 5th wheel behind it? Practical is what you make of it. What's practical for you is not practical for me. I don't need a big car to haul lots of people around. I drive myself 90% of the time. I can count the number of times I have used the back seat of my car, in 4.5 years of ownership, on my fingers and toes. The WRX, if it had a little more knee room, would be perfect for me.

it depends what kind of person you are..

if you want it just to commute and to go here and there and put your child seat in it, then id go with the altima.

but if you want to have more fun driving, take it for a nice fly over at the local highway, or if youre the out-doorsy type then the WRX if for you.

These guys are all about performance, I asked them Maxima (Altima) or SuperCharged GTP.

And most replied, MAXIMA!

I wasn't suprised at the poll with the WRX way ahead. 😉

I'll take the WRX wagon. I can't afford to have more than one vehicle so the ability to haul a lot of cargo is important to me and any wagon out there will have considerably more cargo capacity than a sedan.

haha being somewhere that gets snow on the ground all at ounce than dry than snow again I Want somepthing that can stand the freeky weather & There is nothing better for such than a subaru

Also, would it be safe to say that it's easier to mod a WRX? Seems like the WRX is more readily tunable than the Altima. I mean since it already has a turbo, get a new ECU and bump up the boost. Not to mention that since it's already AWD, putting that power to ground shouldn't be too much harder.

if youre considering modding it, than the WRX is a no brainer choice.. a modded WRX vs a modded Altima.... duhhhh
