In wow: someone was posting about alliance raiders in general, and instinctively i typed "WRONG FORUM" then realized oops and added "WRONG CHANNEL i mean..." people were like "errmmm......"

Also in wow, when someone said something totally retarded someone said "OMGWTFBBQ?!?!?!?!?!!!!1111ONE" which for some reason made me laugh, probally the fact that i had been playing for 5 hours and was tierd.

Having played EQ for 3 years there seems to be one part of WoW that doesn't have me sold yet (I played in beta for a week, but I haven't bought it yet)

It seems the social aspect is lacking in WoW. In EQ you basically had to group to have a good time and get phat xp/lewtz, but in WoW soloing works too well (at least from what I saw). Monsters seem too easy to kill, it doesn't matter what classes you have in your group, you just wade through, not necessarily using strategies or particular class advantages. Also with the much reduced downtime, people don't talk nearly as much in groups, which I found to be half the fun in EQ. I mean just powerleveling and questing all day can get boring, I want to have real conversations with the thousands of other people I'm paying a monthly fee to connect to.

Naturally some of the above is probably biased and overexaggerated since I only played for one week and I didn't get to experience any sort of "higher" end game. Anyone know how the raids are? Do they require tons of coordination? IMO EQ raids got to be pissy when it became a game of clearing aggro and playing with LOS and stuff like that, not to mention the horrid CRs. I like the CR thing in WoW a lot, but I could see raids turn into something a lot more zerg-like as opposed to some EQ encounters which took too much coordination.

Thoughts? Please dispell my apprehension!

Agreed.

It's a massively multiplayer hack-and-slash type game set in the Warcraft universe. The Warcraft universe has its drooling legions of fans, who obviously all bought this. The "hack and slash" crowd really haven't had anything since Diablo II, and this fits perfectly into their market. And 12-year old kids seem to like the graphics.

It's basically the PC version of what happens when you try to make a quality product catering to the lowest common denominator (think the TV show "Friends" or "Seinfeld" - massively popular, and one could certainly laugh when watching them....but hardly 'deep' - it's the surface appeal that keeps the crowds.)

The key, of course, is that WoW really is a quality product. It's got a lot of "polish" - smooth interface, decent performance, strongly "themed" art direction, etc. But, more hardcore role-players simply aren't going to find a lot to like here, nor are those looking for a more "realistic" fantasy experience. For them, Everquest II is the best bet, but, still....long way to go, IMHO.
 
I've yet to find a MMORPG I liked a lot... they all get boring after a few weeks... that said, WoW is one of the better ones, MxO was giving me all sorts of problems lol.

You start to get lots of elite quests around level 20. Most of them lead you to instanced dungeons that require a full party to survive in.

 
Most people only play one MMO at a time, for me at the moment, thats EQ2. WoW's total lack of RP and character customizations are a real turn off for me. I used to dislike grouping, because I always had trouble finding a group in previous MMOs. In EQ2, its never been a problem. Ususally after stating I am looking for a group, or changing my status to LFG, I'm in a group within a few minutes.

When I played the OB for WoW, nobody wanted to group because soloing was so easy. Especially when every female NE Hunter looked exactly like me. 🙁

This far, I haven't seen anyone in EQ2 that looks like my monk or my druid. 🙂

As for social, get in a guild full of cool people (people you've met face to face if possible). You help them, they help you, chat, questing, raids, etc - it's good. The best loot and exp is in the instances, and those are party-only unless you come back when you're level 50 to a level 20 instance or something. You *will* need healer, tanker, dps classes to win in an instance unless you're all way too high level for it (at which point you're wasting time pretty much).

I've only been on one raid on the Horde (Crossroads). It was really fun, you have to stick together. I hope to do more soon, especially when I hit lvl 60. I'm lvl 53 now.

That's it exactly. I'm in a guild with all Colorado folks, and I've met the vast majority of them at least several times, if not see them daily/weekly. It's a really, really good time.

join a high pop pvp server. In contested territory your almost FORCED to group, it's near impossible to really get stuff done without. One lvl 20ish guy isn't intimidating, but 5 of them, and even the high lvl 55+ people tend to think twice.. unless they are in a full group too.

the social aspect of wow isn't lacking imo. Though it needs some improvement, when you reach higher level, you'll realize that groups need to be well built, and raids need to be more organized. If you enjoyed most everything else, i would suggest buying it, elite quests require you to group, i have a lvl 22 UD priest, and i'm not sure i could solo 2-3 lvl 15 elite mobs, even though 2 lvl 20 mobs is within reach.

in the two guilds i'm in (two different characs) the guys are all real social and a pleasure to play with. We help each other out with free stuff (as a guild in a mmorpg should be i guess) and quest together and just have a good time.
