The CRT measurement doesn't include the whole bezel. Every CRT monitor I can remember always lost about 1" of screen size duel to the bezel. The picture that dell shows makes it look like you have to subtract 5" of bezel to determine the viewable screen size.

The actual tube is 19" for example. 1" of the diagonal is covered up by the bezel so it has an 18" true diagonal.

I think it is misleading. It shows the concept, but makes it "shocking" in order to sell LCDs.

Also every CRT I ever bought always stated it's exact viewable image size.

In the fine print? If you are talking about the "advertised" size, you are sadly mistaken.

It is slightly misleading, but not too bad. It's not like people actually buy CRT's nowadays anyways.

I'll measure a 19" CRT and give you the specs:

19" CRT
Viewable 18"

Actual:
Height = 10.8
Width = 14.4

So it appears that 18" viewable is accurate.

so where's the rebuttal by the CRT lovers regarding response rates and lack of ghosting?

Yeah that is misleading. The measurement is the diagonal of the tube, not the diagonal of the entire monitor. Also it looks like they stretched the image of the CRT. Seems too tall.

I know what you mean. I think that web page just illustrates how Dell measures their screens.

As far as I can recall, CRT were always measured from the edge of the viewing surface. When flat panels first hit the market, they were measured from the edge of the case to make them seem larger than they actually were.

Not to start a whole LCD vs CRT debate but I was really disappointed with the Samsung 3000:1 22" LCD monitor. It was mainly the loss of color that annoyed me the most and the pixelation that was hard to get use to.

You havent been purchasing CRT's long. They used to be sold in total diagonal size, which included the bezel. there was a class action lawsuit against this and that brought about the change in how they measure the size.

hahahaha

talk about misinformation.

CRT's have always measure the entire TUBE of which you usually lose about an inch to the bezel. the LCD's have always been measured edge to edge of viewable. hence a 19" crt is smaller than a 19" LCD.

What's more misleading to most people is the "flat screen" vs "flat panel" terminology. I used to sell PC's part time and people would come in assuming the $299 e-machine came with an LCD because it said "flat screen" monitor. I got really tired of explaining that one. I grew more tired of selling $299 PC's for evil corporations though.
