You really can't mess up a rogue build that badly. They are so easy and quick to kill things... My rogue had ~4 days 14 hours /played time to 40. My warlock had ~5 days 20 hours and my holy/disc priest ~6 days 10 hours all using about the same amount of rested, etc... Some people will deny it, but going level 1-60 with a rogue really is setting the game difficulty on easy. Not that that's bad, I like to play my rogue sometimes, just as I like to play my priest, warlock and warrior.
That being said there are a few usual builds for rogues:
23 / 2 / 21 (+ a few floaters) -- imp. cheap shot / preparation in subtlety / improved SS in combat / Cold Blood in Ass
add the floaters to improved gouge and improved KS for a stunlock build, which is a very good PvP build, use improved rupture/sap for PvE instance build. In general a versatile build that doesn't really focus on swords or daggers, but rather on versatility and being ready for any situation. With two cold bloods on one target is a very good single target damge machine... once every 10 minutes when preparation is available.
13(12) / 8 / 30(31) -- Imp ambush / Imp backstab / Seal Fate
that's the basic dagger PvP build all backs, a little tough for PvE because it's sometimes difficult to get backs facing you (and enough energy to backstab). Less burst damage than the 23/2/21 but more damage on a consistent basis.
0 / 30 / 21 -- improved "insert weapon choice here", blade flurry / Cold Blood (some prefer adrenaline rush and dumping about 33-35 talent points in combat)
Basic warrior rogue, no MoD or Camoflage means your stealth is a bit gimped, but your ability to give damage is good and you generally either have +3% dodge or +5%parry (or both) so your ability to avoid (melee) damage is better too. The downside is you are less of a rogue, you give up improved sap (critical for instance play in a group) you don't have any improved openers, you're more just running up to things and swinging.
Most builds are a variation on that theme. Pretty much 2 points in SS is universal. Clod blood is also a VERY nice talent and most will run to get that, Adrenaline rush in the Combat tree is a similar skill with a little less variation to it (Cold Blood can miss) but a longer cooldown. One of those is pretty key I think.
Improved CS is very nice in that it opens up a lot of possibilities for long sequences, it brings energy for CS down to 40, which makes the cost per combo point down well below any other skill the rogue has.
Realistically, fishbits is correct. Once you buy your mount, a gold or two really isn't a ton of money. Also, probably the crappiest rogue build can level faster than the most ideal builds of half the other classes, so don't worry about it too much. A rogue doesn't have to be perfect to do his job.
