Our local theater was sold out all day long. It was a wonderful movie, much better than the first.

I wish they'd report such things as the amount of tickets sold instead of money grossed. Every other year there's a movie that breaks records, yet we aren't comparing apples to apples.

Did more people see Spider-Man 2 than Spider-Man, or is this stat just a reflection of higher prices?

Movies would rather that people dont' ask questions like that. I also find the numbers fairly meaningless without the context of number of ticket sales.

The Matrix Reloaded (US 2003) took a record $42.5 million (£26.27 million) on its opening day in the US on 15 May 2003 from a total of 3,603 cinemas.

Spidey came close, but not close enough.

But there's one big difference. The Matrix trilogy sucked, Spider-Man doesn't

Everything in the industry is based on the gross. The film rental that the studios charge is always based on the gross of the film and not total admissions because ticket price can vary greatly market to market.

I agree.

This, http://www.boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted/ is the closest thing cause they adjust for inflation. Gone with the Wind was ridiculous, over 1 billion dollars!

Top Wednesday Openings

The Matrix Reloaded's Wednesday earning was $5 Million (maybe it was in select theatres only?)
Link

Anyway, nice start for Spider-Man 2 - I only expected it to earn about $20 Million on Wednesday and slowly ramp up its earnings as the weekend approaches...

If somebody had informed me that it was 2 hours and 9 minutes long before I went it would have only made $40.499994 million.

Something isn't right about that system. Gone With the Wind, released 1939, unadjusted gross $198,655,278, adjusted gross $1,218,328,752.
Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, released 1937, unadjusted gross $184,925,486, adjusted gross $657,270,000.

As for Spidey 2, will I feel like I'm watching Mighty Morphin Power Rangers again like I did with the first one?

The total from Snow White includes re-releases in following years. It mentions that on the page.

No one cares about the amount of tickets sold. All they care is that the money they are bringing in is more than what they paid for it.
