The problem here (I touched on this a few days ago), is that we have allowed certain anti-establishent menatilities to become entrenched in this country, both on the left (ghettoes/gangs) and on the right (Xtian Separatists/Joel's Army) that fundamentally reject public education because it's a form of "indoctrination" (exactly what type of indoctrination depends upon what side you're on).

Pick one group to try and mainstream, and stick with it -- I fear that you're just going to have to forsake the other.

I almost don't know where to stand on all of this though. I definitely admire McCain for standing up to not only her, but other vitriolic remarks made during that rally; however, I strongly believe they created all this hatred with the overly negative campaign they have been running.

I live in FL and have been barraged by campaign ads for months now. They are on ALL the time, from both candidates. McCain's ads have ALL been negative, in fact, i've yet to see a single one where they just say how great McCain is, it's all attacks on Obama. Don't get me wrong, I would LOVE to see a positive McCain ad where they simply promote his policies and differences, I can respect those, but when all you do is 'attack attack attack', you bring out the worst in people who are willing to win at all costs.

I'm not one for these wild theories, but part of me almost thinks that this was staged. It was just within the past day that the criticism for McCain's not cracking down on his own followers for making extremely flagrant remarks (such as "string him up!" or "kill him!") at rallies really started rising. Even the guys on FOX were saying that something needed to be done. So this looks awfully coincidental, as if it were done now to enforce an image of a classy McCain. Then again, knowing how these blind-faith people can be, it could very well be legitimate.

I wouldn't put it past them considering who is running his campaign. On the same day he corrects a woman and has to tell the crowd to calm down. OTOH, maybe nobody has directly said these things to McCain and its something we just see anytime a lot of hateful people get together.

I made a comment about this in another thread, but to sum it up. McCain did not create this anger. This anger has been there and festering for a while. If you follow conservative radio and blogs, the base has been hammering McCain for not getting "tough" on Obama. The list of attacks/grievances range as follows:

1) Ayers & Wright
2) Acorn & Vote Fraud
3) CRA + Fannie/Freddie and the Dems involvement with the current economic mess
4) The attack on Palin's family (Saying Trig is really her daughter's son, insinuating incest between Todd Palin and Bristol, etc).

There are a few things I'm missing, but those are a few big ones. Anyway, if you follow the mood of the base they sort of don't like McCain because he's not viewed as a real conservative to begin with, but he is the nominee and so they got to back him. They also don't like McCain because his reputation as a Maverick comes from the fact that he screws fellow Republicans and not Democrats--that's why the press used to like him until he became the Republican nominee. Anyway, that's why he had to pick someone like Palin since Romney was too "Mormon" and Guiliani is considered a RINO (republican in name only).

Anyway, to make a long story short the base has been screaming for this. It's only recently that the press is making a deal about it. McCain has resisted in the early parts of his campaign to go negative. But he's getting a lot of heat from his base that he's not really fighting for them. That's why the crowds are so angry because they feel that McCain won't take it to Obama so they express their grievances openly. Check out any conservative blog to verify.

As for the whole Muslim/Arab thing, don't forget that those chain letters about him being a secret Muslim were being spread around the times of the Democrat primaries. So it was Hillary who first stoked the flames of racism and brought this to the nation's conscience.
