They are fast and furious with little screwing around. I've been having allot of fun over the last few days playing on a few after burning out in vanilla WoW.

Anyone else playing on *edited*? Would be nice to put together a guild of folks that want to do some casual raiding. Something that's not possible on Blizzard servers.

Pretty sure that since they violated Blizzard's ToS, you're not supposed to talk about them here.

This, and if you want to join mine it's $30 a month not $15 :p

(That's a joke by the way)

I edited out the server list just in case. I still pay my monthly subscription and play on the regular servers as well. I've purchased every game worth playing and Blizzard will continue to get my $ even if the only server I play on it free.

Still want to know what people think of them. If Blizzard would have a few servers with EZ mode I'd play there. As it is they don't offer the world I want to play in.

You charge $30 a month for your private server access?

I gladly pay it. The experience is top notch compared to regular live servers.

I must be missing something. What's the draw, beyond using cheats? And using those tends to ruin a game for me in a hurry.

Any play style is "possible" on live... though figuring out which of 200 servers has your perfect guild is another story.

Guildie played on a private server and stupidly he used the same login info as the live server. Needless to say he was hacked on live. These private servers are not always trustworthy.

Have a website for your server?

That's no fun. With good uptime, the rule set I enjoy, players, etc I'd easily pay $30 month or more.

Trying new classes is fun for most people. Spending a few months on each to see how they work at max level is out of the question imo. I can take a character up to max level in a few days on one server and it might take several weeks on another.

Raid loot... where do you begin? How often have you run an instance and came away with nothing useful? Sure it's still entertaining but it's always better when you also gain an improvement.

Raid groups... How many people on live servers will experience BT/Hyjal/Sunwell. Not as many as would like to. With "limited" time of 15-20 hours a week on average you would still struggle to maintain a good raid standing and be on the loot list.

Custom content... Blizzard rightly spends considerable time and resources fine tuning their development to perfection. They also have to respect the lore and certain rules that govern warcraft. Private server devs can throw something fun and unexpected together in a matter of minutes. I've played on two different servers with custom battlegrounds, lands, and instances.

I would never try to persuade someone from leaving Blizzard. In fact I wish they would just charge for the use of the client monthly instead of the servers. Revenue pays for new content and I'm happy to pay them for it.

There's actually no rule against talking about piracy or ToS violations anywhere in Anandtech... mind pointing out what line of the forum guidelines gives you that idea? So long as you don't link to or talk about how to break the ToS, it's all kosher.

That made you ROFL? Shouldn't waste perfectly good acronyms by generalizing them.

Anyhow. I'm fine telling people what servers I play on if the mods are.

Since most private servers are "accelerated" (ie more xp in less time, also easy access to phat loots) it's easier to experience big portions of the game that would otherwise be impossible to access for a casual player. That's certainly a draw; being able to see end-game content that is impossible to normally see for most people.

Also, when I played WoW sometimes I wanted to try a new class but didn't feel like going through the 70 levels of grind. And remember, you have to deal with assholes from the other side (I was Horde) constantly ganking your newbie. It's so frustrating. Instead, you can play on a private server and level up a character quickly, seeing all of the lower level content in a relatively short time span. It's pretty sweet if you want to try something new without the bullshit of a live server. That said, nothing beats a good raid guild on live WoW.

Actually, I remember leaving my favorite guild just so that I could see Hyjal and Black Temple. Yeah, it was that important to me. I was so disappointed with the experience (ie not being with my guild buddies) that I ended up quitting a month later. So yeah, being able to experience end-game content is a pretty big deal to some people.

I think Blizzard is taking a step in the right direction with Wrath of the Lich King, allowing players to organize 10-man instances for the end-game content instead of the obligatory 25, the only difference being loot tables. I don't mind if I'm getting shitty loot. I want to see the cool end-game content!

For those of you asking I DO NOT have a private server, I think it's ludacris to pay $15 a month for the game and was trying to make a joke :p
