With the 15 dollars you save from not playing you could buy:

Movie for 1 person
1 hour at the bar
1/4 of a new video game
Pack of AA batteries
70 miles of fuel.
2 packs of toilet paper

I'll spend the $15 on 100 hours of gaming instead.

Honestly, private servers in most cases aren't what they're cracked up to be. Usually, scripted events do not work and when it comes to instances, bosses just kind of... exist in there. I mean for someone that's done these instances before, going into say BWL or Naxxramas is unlike the experience of doing it in the real game. But I do admit it'd be so much niftier if you could do the real game instances without having to fight trash :p.

Anyone have any idea if the new WotLK beta-based private servers are any decent? I've "had private access to" a wotlk alpha server, but frankly, the death knight implementation was terribad (they had no implementation of the runic power). I don't mind the lack of a working starting area... I kinda wanna get used to the skills a bit and I keep trying to enter all the "win a beta key!" contests, but seem to have bad luck at winning :p.

Where do you live that everything is so expensive? And buying used games > buying new games ;)

I game on PC only so unless you pirate I'm not aware of any cheap solutions. The prices are pretty close even in the mid-west.

i believe the latest server file doesn't use any of the blizzard IP, so it is legal... but once you load the database files with same blizzard names, you're breaking the law. also, whoever is connecting to that private server is braking the law.

Other than the pack of AA batteries (how many batteries are you getting for 15?) I agree with him. You can't beat an MMO for the value. 15/mo for the hours you can put into it is unbeatable. It's by far one of the most cost-effective forms of entertainment in existence.

by the way, sneaky's server IS the shit.

PTR is down for long periods of time. You also don't have near the degree of freedom as you do with private servers.

People seem to be pretty negative against them but there are mass numbers playing. They let me do in a day what takes weeks @ Blizz. It's not better or worse but it is enjoyable.

Search on Google shopping for batteries and the range started at $15. Didn't look what kind :)

MMOs provide cheap entertainment that's for sure.

So um, I don't play wow much anymore, but wouldn't mind trying one of these private servers out. What can I google to find one, without someone posting info here if it's not allowed. ^^

There's actually no rule against talking about piracy or ToS violations anywhere in Anandtech... mind pointing out what line of the forum guidelines gives you that idea? So long as you don't link to or talk about how to break the ToS, it's all kosher.

posting links and names to private servers is against the rules here.

Aye video games in general when compared to other forms of entertainment are very cost effective. You get about an hour of entertainment for $5 at the movies. Closer to 10 hours with a video game. However if we assume the game nor the items above have been purchased:

I'll take a month of toilet paper over a private server subscription. Your house is going to stink like sh1t!

I edited out the server list just in case. I still pay my monthly subscription and play on the regular servers as well. I've purchased every game worth playing and Blizzard will continue to get my $ even if the only server I play on it free.

Still want to know what people think of them. If Blizzard would have a few servers with EZ mode I'd play there. As it is they don't offer the world I want to play in.

ROFL. Not before someone quoted you.

That made you ROFL? Shouldn't waste perfectly good acronyms by generalizing them.

Anyhow. I'm fine telling people what servers I play on if the mods are.

No, not an actual roll on the floor. It's just an expression. I'll do what I want with my electrons you do what you want with yours.

The sale of accounts / gold violates the ToS as well, but forum mod Oakenfold has assured me it's ok to talk about that.

Anyway, private servers defeat the purpose of mmorpgs and seem pointless to me, and I find it strange that they interest people. But it takes all kinds.

Seems like reasonable prices in S California to me

$12 for a movie ticket
$10 for a pitcher (which should last maybe 30 min)
$60 for a new game (obviously less for used)
etc.

Yes, that is against the rules, but apparently the edit was made to remove the list before I posted :p What has gone on so far has been kosher (Except for the one guy requesting how to get a private server, that's not kosher)

I had a lot of fun playing on priv servers back when the emulators were very primative and you could exploit a lot.

Like the teleport UI addons that used to work on old WoW, made traveling on priv servers much easier, and you used to be able to aggro a ton of mobs and out run them, so we'd make priests and AOE them with all the diff ranks of instant cast holy nova.

Yes, I'm sorry, I wasn't clear, I was referring to him listing names of private servers.

Obviously we can discuss them without providing access information, it'd be silly to ban that.
