Wow my mobo just totally malfunctioned

Ok, maybe not completely malfunctioned, but a few things stopped working. Like all of a sudden:

All USB ports stopped working. I go to plug a mouse or keyboard in, and a little flag from the bottom right hand corner of the screen says: "Windows cannot recognize USB port. The object that is in the USB port has malfunctioned, please click this window to fix it." Click...lol

Sensors don't work. MBM5 is freaking out, one second it's at 37C, the other it's at -1C. When I try to access it from bios, it shows that my system temp is like 126C and my CPU temp is like 1C. Then it freezes.

I have a PS/2 keyboard plugged into it and it works fine, I can't find the PS/2 mouse I had (ugh) so I'm on another comp right now. Here's what really happened though:

I installed nVidia's monitoring software, it was called nVidia System Utilities or something, I load it up, don't change a thing (just looked around), clicked "OK," and my mouse stops moving and MBM5 started freaking out (showing those temps). So I'm stuck, I've tried resetting CMOS, tried using different ports, different mice, nothing works. Help!
 
I did. I even uninstalled MBM5 because it kept jumping and the alarm would go off and since I didn't have a mouse I couldn't disable it so I just uninstalled it.

I found an adapter to my Logi USB mouse so I'm using that through PS/2 right now. Currently I'm reflashing BIOS (even though I have the latest BIOS). If that doesn't fix it I'll reinstall drivers.
 
If your case has any front-USB wiring plugged in, unplug it. I recall hearing woes from MSI Neo2 P939 owners over it. Seems the pinout is not quite what it's expected to be... :evil:
 
I did unplug them. No go. I tried plugging my mouse/keyboard/anything USB into the front slots, no go either.

EDIT: Do you guys think that a reformat would do it?
 
Why must people post things like this right before I buy the product in question 😛. Best of luck with your mobo, keep us updated on your findings.

So they were plugged in, then? If they have the problem I'm thinking of, which is a 5V pin where you'd expect a ground pin... 🙁 I had an EPoX like that.

 
Yeah they were plugged in, but I unplugged em and it still doesn't work.

Also it doesn't look like you finished your sentence. If they have the problem I'm thinking of, which is [this]...(where's the rest?)
 
Sorry, I was implying that unplugging the case's USB wiring after the controller is fried won't make it magically un-fry again 😱
 
NautikaL are you sure? Anyone wanna back this up? I don't really wanna reformat because it takes hours and since I'm leaving for NJ next week I want to RMA if I have to asap.

Mech, I don't think it's fried. Windows still sees it, just doesn't recognize what's plugged into it.
 
reformating will solve it. if reformating doesnt work, most likey its permanently gone

you could also try downloading knoppix from bit torrent and burning it to a cd. you will boot into linux and see if usb works there. it took me 30min to download 700mb or it from bit torrent. make sure you download the english version though haha...i made that mistake the first time...
 
I too was about to buy a Neo2 Plat. even though every muscle in my body is resisting due to my past experience with MSI...frankly they have just been a pain for me...but here I go again. 🙂
 
Check if the capacitors blew?
That's what happened with my Epox 8Rda+ too before it wouldn't work at all.
 
Did this problem happen immediately after installing the Nvidia software? I have a feeling that it accesses the same range of system I/O ports/SMBus addresses as MBM does to read the sensors, and since the two programs weren't written to co-operate, using them in combination will lead to unpredictable access to those system-control addresses, which will make your system "funky". I would definately try uninstalling them both, completely, or at worst, a re-format, and see if the problem continues.
 
Well, after a reformat and update of drivers, problem still persists. Hey uncle, how can I check if my capacitors blew?

Try reconnecting the device. If windows still does not recognize it, replace the device.

I've tried all the ports, tried using different devices (mice, USB memory sticks, MP3 players, etc), no avail. Everything else seems to be working (except for my sensors too...hmm...), just not the damn USB ports.

In fact, the sensors AND keyboard (when attached to USB) won't work even in the bios screen. I hope this isn't a hardware problem and I don't wanna go through the hassle of RMA, I'm leaving for jersey next Sunday. Ahh!
 
Waaah.

I sent MSI an email. Hopefully they'll reply soon, their phone lines suck 😛

I'll probably have to RMA it anyway.

well just wait til after you get back if you have to RMA it.. I'd totally clear the CMOS, unplug everything, let it sit for a few mins, try again. if not, try inspecting the USB ports, see if any of the pins inside are bent/shorting out, or that the case bezel piece (if you have one) is not interfering with the connectors either. If everything looks OK, then sounds like you might have an RMA on your hands.

MSI emailed me back (quick) with a newer version (1.4) of the bios. I really don't have any spare floppies lying around...can I flash the bios from windows?

One more thing, could it be that the IO metal things (the little tabs) aren't touching the ports properly? I read somewhere that these tabs should touch the back of the motherboard so that everything stays grounded or something.
