Your daughter is almost 10 and still believes in the tooth fairy!? Jesus christ! I will never teach my kids to believe in the tooth fairy or santa claus. My mother didn't and I'm glad that she didn't.

:| What a cruel joke. You think parents neglecting their kids and letting them get tattoos and smoke when they're freshmen in highschool is bad? Try knowingly letting your children live a lie for years and then breaking their hearts. Fvcking cruel and unnecessary. My kids will learn the fundamentals of life from my wife and I. Anything else that they want to believe can be decided when they decided that they want to have an opinion about it.

Ugh.

Sorry, just had to get that off my chest. I'm done now.

Wait, there's no tooth fairy? Who's been sticking $100 bills under my pillow then?

I figured you needed some sort of compensation for all my fun and games.

I used to work at a theme park back in high school and I worked as the Amazing Alfredo where they'd try to guess either the person's age, month they were born or weight. The funny thing about this is that we got no training whatsoever on how to guess anything. The trick was that it didn't matter. People would pay $1 to have us guess and even if they won the prize, it wasn't worth a $1 anyway, so it didn't matter. They bought those prizes in such bulk and it worked out to be far less than a $1 per unit.

One thing that we did do was ALWAYS underestimate the weight and age if it was a woman. You didn't want to risk pissing anyone off after all.

Try being a parent of a teenage girl! She turns Sweet Sixteen next Sat.

I *hate* the fact that all jeans sold these days are those low-rise, hip huggers. And short shorts are about all that can be had.

It takes my daughter and I about 2-3 hours going from store to store in the mall until I can find clothes that I'm comfortable with her wearing and that she likes, too.

One of them was fairly friendly and initiated a conversation with me. When I asked her where she was going to college she said that she was a freshman in high school! What would that make her, 14 or 15?

My daughter is 9 going on 10 in December and she still believes in the tooth fairy. Scary to think that this girl was only 4 or 5 years older.

By the way, Interlocken is an affluent community with many new developments thats just outside of Boulder. The girl was originally from Jersey City and she made mention that this was her piece of "suburbia". It did appear to be a rather sterile environment.

I guess that living in such a place and tooling around in a gas guzzling SUV while clutching a cell phone is the new American dream.

It's definitely not for me...but I digress.

New American dream? What did you think the American dream has been since the 50s?

Btw, you have bigger problems if your daughter is 10 and believes in the tooth fairy.

Well, she just got her report card today. All A's and B+'s.

She tests out at about the 82nd percentile for cognitive ability too and many teachers commented that she was a joy to have in class so I'm not to worried about her.

Sorry if it offends you that she's hasn't lost her innocence yet.

i do agree with you. It is sickening to me to think that young girls are "maturing" earlier and earlier. by maturing, i mean having sex, smoking, just become older too early. i cannot belileve my eyes some days. I will be at the mall and will see young YOUNG girls wearing tons of makeup, skimmpy clothes and hanging on older, gross guys. I am not that old, but i can remember back to when i was their age, and i was still playing with barbies and thinking boys were gross(so were all of the other little girls that i knew). Innoncence is lost and i feel horrible that girls are missing the joys of being young. Now, instead of worrying which friends to invite to a sleepover, they are worrying if they are pregnant.

whatever age you guess, subtract 3 years. that should give you a better estimate of age. say a girl looks 18 to you. she's probably 15. now run :D

If a girl tells you she's 20 and looks 16 - she's 12.
If she tells you she's 26, and looks 26 - she's damn near 40.

The older I get (I'm 24), the worse I am at judging ages. I have no idea if some girls are 15 or 25. Seriously. And it can be dangerous!

it's easier when you're on a college campus...at least 98% of them are legal...and then if you're at a 21+ bar, they're either 21, or they have a fake and they're there for a reason ;)

And another thing! What's with this trend of putting suggestive writing on young girls' T's and A's? (on their clothing, that is) I'll see 14 year olds with "Tease" written on her chest or "Booty" written on her ass. Who the hell lets their kids wear that in public? I even saw one girl that had "Bling!Bling!" written across her asscheeks!

I'm not even talking HS senior types. I've seen girls at the mall that wear this who must be in junior high.

What a Wanker you are nik! Let children enjoy their little fantasies because adulthood is no fairy tale!

Why train them for a life that they're never going to have? Why not train them from the start for what really lies ahead in life: responsibility, etc.? Pumping kids heads full of fantasies is simply a waste of time.

Is it just me or is anyone else here thinking this guy shouldn't reproduce?

This discussion reminded me of a Harry Chapin song:

Dreams Go By
by Harry Chapin
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Description: Originally found on the album Portrait Gallery. Also found on Greatest Stories Live, 1975; and Story of a Life, 1999.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There you stand in your dungarees
Looking all grown up and so very pleased
When you write your poems they have so much to say
When you speak your dreams it takes my breath away

You know I want to be a ball player
A regular slugging fool
But both our dreams must wait awhile
Until we finish school

And so you and I
We'll watch our years go by
We'll watch our sweet dreams fly
Far away, but maybe someday

I don't know when
But we will dream again
And we'll be happy then
Till our time just drifts away

There you stand in your wedding dress
You're so beautiful that I must confess
I'm so proud you have chosen me
When a doctor is what you want to be

You know I want to be a painter, girl
A real artistic snob
But I guess we'll have our children first
You'll make a home, I'll get a job

Listen to the seasons passing
Listen to the wind blow
Listen to the children laughing
Where do broken dreams go?

There you stand in your tailored suit
So many years gone by, but your're still so cute
We take the car to go and meet the bus
When our grandchildren come to visit us

You say you should have been a ballerina, babe
There are songs I should have sung
But I guess our dreams have come and gone
You gotta dream when you are young

And so you and I
We'll watch our years go by
We'll watch our sweet dreams fly
Far away, but maybe someday

I don't know when
But we will dream again
And we'll be happy then
Till our time just drifts away

Rip: Haha, I'm just as bad. I have a horrible time guessing anyones age, especially Teens. I think it's because when I was 13+ I had a self-image of being an adult. Now that I am an adult I see these munchkins, notice their immaturity, then am shocked to hear they are X age. It's partially denial, partially embarrassment when I realize that I was definitely like that!

i'm surprised that quote took this long to show up.
