Wow .... I will never buy an MS console again.

I don't really see the problem... I mean they auto-renewed me once but I just called and said "Ah, no, you're taking that off" and they did. I start looking for cheap 12 month cards when I get down to about 6 months.

The thing is, when you go buy something, you know what you are getting. I paid for one month. I shouldn't have to look in the fine print to find out that this is a recurring cost.

At a bare minimum, they should let you turn of the automatic renewal via the web site. Why do they make the effort to tell me that automatic renewal is on even though I don't have a choice? If they make it look like it was a choice at one point, why wasn't it an option when I paid for 1 month in the fist place?

MSFT is a profit whore that cares less about the customer. In the long term, customer satisfaction is what is important.

Why do you think Home Depot asked no questions of my father in law when he returned a used toilet? Because HD is in the business of low prices and customer satisfaction. MSFT is in neither business. And in the long term, businesses that don't keep customers happy become ghosts.

Well I'll just say MS keeps me happy.

To each his own.

I've seen Ubuntu in action. It make windows look like Dos.

 I have Ubuntu installed on two computers, and that's just crazy talk. Ubuntu is a good, but it's not some kind of super-OS

Debate is for another thread.

The only reason I use Windows is because I don't want to deal with teaching people how to use Ubuntu.

Logic fail. You're the one who claimed that Ubuntu makes Windows look like DOS. I didn't claim Windows is anything great. The only way you can say Ubuntu makes Windows look like DOS is if you're dazzled by pointless 3D UI features.

Most subscriptions to services auto-renew. That is understood by just about everyone. Magazine subscriptions don't auto-renew. Do you complain about your cell phone service auto-renewing? Do you complain about your cable TV auto-renewing? Do you complain about your Internet service auto-renewing? Do you complain that your utilities auto-renew? Sign up for any service on the Internet - including Netflix! - and you'll probably find that they all auto-renew and don't give you the option to disable the auto-renewal during the sign-up process. Many don't give you the option to stop auto-renewal at all - you have to cancel the service entirely. Netflix is that way (or was last I checked) - you can't tell them to stop your service at the end of your current paid period, you have to cancel the service (or put it on hold) and you lose whatever remaining time you had paid for. That is the way that most subscription services work. You assumed Xbox Live is different, and you were wrong.

I used a 12month card off Amazon so they don't have my card for that but I bought some MS points off Live so damn, I guess they got me there.

I've actually found that asking for Xbox Live and points cards for Christmas and birthdays is the best way to get the services and avoid giving them your number.

Not that I agree with how MS handled this, but you really ought to be buying an XBL Gold card elsewhere instead of through your console with your CC. You won't have this issue, and more importantly you can XBL Gold cheaper elsewhere.

MS: 12 Month Gold - $49.99
Newegg: 12 Month Gold - $38.99 http://www.newegg.com/Product/...x?Item=N82E16874103030

the going rate at brick and mortar stores these days have been 29.99 for 12 months of xbl. quite nice. the stores rotate so keep an eye out on the hotdeals forum.

Lots? Nope, but a quick search and scan of threads turns up enough info about auto-renew and CC hassles to know what you are getting into ahead of time.

Ahh, one thread about it a year ago. I would say that falls under very rarely discussed.

Without needing to hit up google, though I always do anyways.

You expect to deal with huge hassles when you use your CC online? You must be a very easy customer to rob, errrr, keep happy 😛 😉

well it's your fault for not reading the fine print when you signed up using a credit card.

it is clearly outlined in the terms and conditions.

This

Yeah I thought it was known to be auto renewing most people consider it essential to their 360

I'd say the issue is less about auto-renewing which a good feature, and making it extremely difficult to cancel service or remove payment methods which is a bad feature.

Ahh, one thread about it a year ago. I would say that falls under very rarely discussed. I provided 4 threads pertinent to the issue though, and could find more, since I've read a fair number of member complaints on the topic. I thinkt he reason so few start topics specifically about it, it they know they will likely be the victim of a pile on. 😉

You are just busting my chops now right? 😀 Because doing my research means that a merchant has a difficult task just to get me to do business with them, be it online or B&M. Case in point: I haven't given XBL a CC#that could be charged in the future.

I think you might be over reacting a bit... while yes, bad customer support CAN be a pain, you've only had to deal with them once?

Quick Q in the same vein... I haven't bought time via CC, but they do have some CCs in the system for MS points. If I ever let it run out will they use one of those cards for xbox live?

No, you simply revert to Silver as I've had that happen to me.

Gotta say I'm a bit confused now.

I've heard this complaint before, that it's hard to cancel a Live account. I just logged into my Live account and it says that AutoRenew is off and there's a link to turn it on. I didn't click it, but if I had is there then a link to turn it back off? Also, I was able to remove an old credit card from the Xbox website. There's a link right there to Remove a payment method.

Your CC probably wasn't attached to some active Gold account that would be used for Auto-Renew.

It sounds like there isn't a link to turn it back off, although I haven't looked.

It will ask you if you are certain that you want to remove the CC from payment options, then when you continue it will return with
This payment option cannot be removed at this time. It might be associated with an active subscription.
That makes it something of a PITA to stop them from charging you again, and should not be necessary.

If you no longer wanted that CC# attached to your account, you should be able to delete it, quickly and simply. Not have to deal with the CC issuer, or use one time #, or deal with MS support.

All I can say is that PSN is a joke. Xbox Live is where it's at. I have both systems and play SF4 on PSN and it sucks balls. Live isn't even that expensive to begin with.

i got hit with this too, luckily my CC company pwnd microsoft in the face and i didnt have to lift my finger more than once.
