He gets eaten and his body claimed by the sea at the end.

If it's real, it had to be filmed from a helicopter, no? It looks to smooth to be real...it pans out just too perfectly. Shens.

It's real. Guys actually do that up near Half Moon Bay in Northern California when the big swells hit. The waves are so big you can't actually paddle to catch them, they have to be towed into them on a jet ski. They have recorded waves of 40-50' up there.

Edit-I think this was in Hawaii though.
 
Part of that video was edited, but in reality, there have been guys surfing close to 100ft faces. That video is not %100 real.

Out of curiousity, does anyone know how fast they go on those waves? Without a point of reference it's hard to determine, but it looks like they have to be doing atleast 40MPH.

As far as panning out perfectly, the cameramen film about as much as the surfers surf. They know where to aim.
 
Wasn't this from the very last scene in that Billabong Odyssey movie?

After watching the movie Riding Giants (another great big wave surfing movie) I ordered a similar movie from Netflix and I distinctly remember seeing this.

I wonder where the camerman was for that shot. On the beach or in a helicopter?
 
That video is of Cortes Bank - a shallow spot in the ocean about 100 miles west of San Diego. The guy surfing is probably Mike Parsons, but I can't really tell in the video. Mike Parsons, Brad Gerlach, Ken Collins, and Peter Mel were the first guys to surf Cortes Bank a few years ago, and there's a video out there with this footage (and more) of the trip. I don't remember what the title of the video is, but you could probably find it at a surf shop.

Anyway, here are photos of cortes bank
And a bio on Peter Mel who organized the trip to cortes bank. (The bio was written in 2000, before the trip. I can't find a newer one)

Edit: Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe I'm confusing this footage with other footage. This could be at Peahi, in Hawaii.

I remember some Discovery-Channel-esque show talking about a confluence of events that caused huge waves in Hawaii a number of years ago.

One helicopter mounted camera had footage showing just how huge the swells were: another helicpoter was hovering and filming the surfers, but its rotors were BENEATH the tops of the swells.
