That video is of Cortes Bank - a shallow spot in the ocean about 100 miles west of San Diego. The guy surfing is probably Mike Parsons, but I can't really tell in the video. Mike Parsons, Brad Gerlach, Ken Collins, and Peter Mel were the first guys to surf Cortes Bank a few years ago, and there's a video out there with this footage (and more) of the trip. I don't remember what the title of the video is, but you could probably find it at a surf shop.

Anyway, here are photos of cortes bank
And a bio on Peter Mel who organized the trip to cortes bank. (The bio was written in 2000, before the trip. I can't find a newer one)

Hate to be the guy, but you are incorrect, that is not cortez bank.

Here is a video of a %100 real and heavier wave.

If it's not Cortes bank, where is it? Peahi? The fact that Laird hamilton surfed teahupoo is fairly irrelevant, even if it's impressive.

I have seen the actually dvd where this clip is, i cannot remember the name of the dvd. But it is all real. Once i find the name of the dvd i'll post it.

One guy posted on YouTube "Riding Giants"

The video is not real..... How else can i say that?

The original parts of that video are of jaws.

I posted that video of laird because it is impressive for people who dont surf/look at surf sites/etc. I also posted that video because its real, unlike the video posted.

There is alot of misinformation in this thread and you shouldnt confuse people. I still cant believe:
#1 you thought that was cortez, the water color is off, the conditions are off, and did you really think baggies are worn at cortez?
#2 you thought that was filmed from a boat (even though its not real, the real parts were filmed from a helicopter).

How is the video "not real" but some parts are? It's one continuous shot - where are the edited parts?

Sorry, peopel have surfed Cortes all of what? 5 times now? Sorry I don't know exactly what the water looks like 100 miles off the coast of San Diego. I don't know what "conditions" are off. It's cloudy. It's not too windy. Seems ok to me. But yeah, I guess people would probably be wearing fullsuits at Cortez, but it seems like it's far enough south that it might be warm enough. The Clip just reminded me of Cortes Bank footage - probably from Step Into Liquid.

And I changed my answer on the boat thing. The beginning of the video does look like it was filmed from a boat, you can see the camera panning up and down abit as if the boat was rocking. Later in the video it's ovbious it was taken from a helicopter, though.

Still though, I want to know how you know this is fake, and what's fake about it. It looks like it could be real Jaws footage to me.

Buck I don't know what you're talking about. What video are you watching? Are you saying that parts from the movie Jaws are in that clip? I'm really confused. Where in Jaws did they have a guy being pulled out on a wave with a jetski?

And as far as it being Hawaii, I don't know where that specific wave is (and I don't care) but we get waves like that off Half Moon Bay and Santa Cruz. I used to surf Stinson.

I'm not trying to get an attitude with you, 99.99% of your posts are great 🙂, but misinformation about surf is a vice for me i guess.

I used to be a rampant member on surfer mag forums and this was answered by a couple of editors. This video is pretty old (2-3 years at least).

I have a lot of down time here at work to read surfing/computer related crap... Cortez bank has not been ridden very much at all. Mainly for this reason, it is in the middle of the ocean. What that means is this, not only does there need to be size for it to break, it needs winds that are close to dead to prevent chop. Surfline's sean collins did a great story on this that i cant seem to find explaining what needs to come together for cortez to be not only surfable, but good. The only shots you will see of cortez being ridden is when its oil slick glass otherwise the chop on the face will make it almost unridable. The said video shows hard offshore winds (like the kind maui is famous for) and the water temp is in the 50's, hardly warm enough for skinning it.

*edit*
The first part of the video where its being drawn back and the wave starts to look like its 200 ft is what was edited.

With that all said, these guys have balls. The biggest wave I've taken is 10 feet (and that was not on purpose, it was a storm and I had to take the next wave in since it looked like there was going to be lightning) and although it was a blast I would never do that again on purpose. I've had my ribs broken and my neck sprained by 6 footers so I wouldn't want to have a bad spill on a 10 footer let alone one of those monsters these guys ride.

I conceded that I was wrong and that it was filmed at Peahi and not Cortes. It just looks like a *really* difficult shot to fake, and it doesn't look *that* big that it couldn't be a real wave on Maui.

Do you know how it was edited? Did they just shrink the size of the surfer on the wave?

There was a post just like this on the surfer forums (their search engine is worse than ours, tried to find it), two photog editors said that the first part was fabricated where its drawn away from the surfer.

No, no, it's cool. I was just so confused when you started talking about Jaws. Didn't realize it was a break.

Another video of jaws.

I would cry if one of those were actually behind me...

Well I guess the point of it is that it looks really cool...and scary... It seems that the way the camera could have been angled made it look like it was a massive wall of water. Oh well...
