It might have been that Rolling Stone columnist that went "undercover" into the Bush campaign in Florida and stayed with some very religious people (I shan't call them Christian as they weren't what Christ taught). He pretty much came up with the summary that religious people continue to seek out challenges like abortion, same-sex marriage, etc. in order to challenge their faith. If/when they are victorious in their efforts, they look to it as strengthening their faith.
