WoW arenas....how lame.

I can't believe this is Blizzards idea of "end game pvp". Tossing people in a small box to run around pillars, fighting your own faction for goblins. I love the game, and am a bit addicted to it for sure. I enjoy the BG's, where you actually have to complete objectives and fight more than a couple people. Yet most of the BG's I play in, most people are there just "for the marks".

I guess I'm not sure the point of enjoying PvP in a game if you join a PvP battleground not for the enjoyment of it, but for marks, to get what? PvP gear right? So....that makes 0 sense to me.

I wish Blizzard was a little less cheap and had implemented some more thought-provoking, epic world-PvP. These arenas are the dumbest thing I've ever seen. All people do are run around pillars...it's just lame IMO. I would think that such a rich company, after years of development and evolution of this game...couldn't thought of something a bit more deep than "arena". But perhaps that's how they got so rich in the first place, getting people hooked to cheap, dumb ideas and milking it for all it's worth.

I guess I'm just hooked to a game I'm not evolving with anymore. I wish there would come a day where a guild would say, "We're not raiding Black Temple tonight, Org is under attack". That would be really cool and fun. Instead, Trade chat is littered with, "LF 2's, LF 3's"....UGH. If I wanted to deathmatch...I'll play a shooter.

Anyway, end rant. Perhaps my time with the game is nearing an end. Is there a game, perhaps an MMO, that would more suit my needs and playstyle?

Thanks all
James

Wow has always been a pve game in line with how EQ 1 was first and foremost. PvP will always be the red haired step child in WoW. I suggest you take a look at the upcoming titles such as Warhammer Online or AION for pvp that matters.

See if it were continuous like BGs it would be much more enticing. Playing 10 games after waiting in queues to see what you get next, then repeating the process a whole week later is just a chore. You can play more games but the benefit is not there like honor is. Plus I hate duels - random encounters of a BG are so much more fun. It's kind of like comparing UT Deathmatch vs. 1v1 dueling... complete randomness FTW.

I always played the battlegrounds... I never got into the Arena stuff because no one played it on my server. I hated BG though so much a lot of the time. Twinks dominate the game. >_<

WoW would be a lot better game for me if it had even one aspect that is all skill and no gear. The arena sucks due to being just another grind where, apart from the top 5% or sth, fights are on uneven footing. If you ask me, you should get a complete, final set of PvP gear upon creating an arena team. For rewards, you could e.g. allow use of PvP gear outside the arena in PvE and world PvP, give out titles, and cosmetic replacements like turning PvP armor into badass glowing, effects-laden armor that's still the same stats.

In this system, if you got any arena rewards, that would be because you and/or your team can play and win. Not because you have better gear or someone in better gear is boosting you.

Tournament realms are a step in this direction, but not enough. Consider a situation where you have a chance to play against a chess grandmaster. You just sit down and start playing. Is this a fair match? In the sense that your own actions determine the outcome, yes. But if there is only one other chess board in existence you can practice on before facing the GM, and you only get permission to play on *that* board if you grind four months of backgammon first, you can't possibly win the GM unless you did the backgammon grind.

For early game PvP, they should just hand you a free PvP trinket the second you enter your first BG. I dunno what WoW PvP is really balanced around, but it doesn't take a genius to see it's imba beyond all hope before participants have most of their escape methods including trinket. When you go 100-0 in a stunlock or instant fear+silence without being able to take an action - any action - that's horrible game design.

Level-based resists, melee defense, crit chance and miss differences should not exist in PvP, just like weaponskill already doesn't. The high-level character has more hp, mana, skills and better gear to begin with. If the level difference was not penalized even more, like it currently is, you could join a 29 BG at 22, 70 BG at 63, and actually expect to make a difference. As things are, joining at very low levels is a huge disservice towards your team.

This coupled with the complete lack of anything endgame to do in PvE (woo! Let's waste 7 hours doing a 40 man raid so one person can get something maybe good!) made me sell my account a year and a half ago.

High ranking PvP arena sucks too much. Even with equal S4 gear, everything comes down to pure luck. Close to zero skills evolved in the top 5%.

I've seen mirror matches where one team wins just because of a chained crit fest, stunlock bonanza, or luck resists.

Arenas were my in-game reason for quitting. The decision was also affected by out-of-game reasons, namely the fact I was spending way too much time playing. WoW becoming so lame made dropping the habit pretty easy though

You should note that
A) Thousands of people like it anyway
B) The game keeps changing. There's a 2nd expansion pack coming that changes it more.

Go play a different game, then give us a shiny new personal blog about how much better it is.

Some of the most fun I've ever had (warning, EQ alert!) involved being in a raid with a mob that we wanted on our timer. En-route to the mob an opposing guild entered the zone in an attempt to keep us from the mob to stop our progression (i.e., SSRA, involves keying etc. etc.). To make a long story short a massive PVP battle ensued.

Nothing short of awesomeness in my opinion, that was several years ago and it left an epic impression in my mind of what an MMORPG is supposed to be, not some carebear pve mouse wheel where all you do is gear and level.

Too bad my realm never really had anything like that other than kill a boss before the others could kill it. Mithanial Marr was an awesome server to play on with Afterlife, but it got to the point where we were beta testing the content and we all quit for WoW or other sorts of games.

WoW actually had that sort of system with AQ40 opening where you had to kill the dragons before others could and get the drops so you could open the gate earlier and be prepared first or all the big bugs it spawns.

Fact is, it has never changed that much when it comes to PvP. They have added new environments and game modes but the problems are, always were, with the core of the game system which is not very conducive to PvP. I'm actually thinking, maybe they don't dare to take even a small part of PvP off the PvE grind model and let it stand on its own merits, because they don't trust their own ability to balance and give meaning to the actual gameplay. When it's behind an obfuscation layer of pervasive gear/level/class imbalance, people's attention is drawn to those things and they can hold off a fundamental revamp to the system indefinitely.

Wow, you're just a barrel of sunshine aren't you Foxery?

Thousands of people liking it has nothing to do about whether it's garbage PvP or not.

I have no idea what shiny new blog means.

Talk like a normal, friendly human being or get the hell out of my thread, thanks!

WOW end-game hasn't changed at all since they added BGs. That's why I left. I didn't enjoy raiding (getting 25-40 people together is a chore, and then all it takes is one person out of sync and the whole raid probably dies). I didn't enjoy PvP (BGs were fun the first few times, Arena was never enjoyable, I had a lot more fun finding and killing in the wild). The choice to quit was obvious, and boy did it piss off my guild :p

WoW pvp really sucks and there is no way around it. I am hoping the next expansion and its pvp zone may bring something worth while to the debacle.

The only debacle in WOW is that people want to play a game that requires nothing but your time to be successful at. Being good at WOW is like being really good at watching tv.

You'd be surprised at how many people are simply bad players. Some are just really slow at picking things up. On top of that, getting better gear doesn't mean you can out-dps or out-pvp someone else. That's simply a false statement. If you work in analogies, having a nice/fast car doesn't mean you're a good driver.
