this is really nice... $30 to upgrade and now the forums are incredi-fast. so much more enjoyable. i tried to subscribe a couple months ago but my card was denied, so i was like, well, its ok. but that dasmed network.realmedia.com server is always dead and it took forever, so i got back around to subscribing, and man... the speed is hellacious!
 
lol yeah.. i was somewhere else checkin AT real fast and didnt wnana log into subscriber.. so just usin the reg server again SUCKED 😀

It makes a HUGE difference, even on dial-up it was dramatic. On a cable or T1 connection (for those of you who post from work), it's even more impressive.

i actually feel like the dsl is worthwhile now... and i hit reload just for the fun of it!
 
I really love the forums, but I don't think I'd subscribe. I'd try to get the most out of my $30.00 and you can only imagine how much more I'd be addicted to the forums 😉
 
Pretty sad that they are capping the bandwidth for non-subscribers.. bascially forcing people to pay to get any real enjoyable use out of the forums.. Anand's first step to selling out..

even with subscription's, at the very most he might be making a tiny bit of $$ off the forum. he's probably still a net loss though. its his forum, not the red cross. he doesnt owe you anything, if you dont like it, leave. your bitter attitude won't be missed.

Exactly right. The forum as we knew it before was hemorrhaging money, even with subscriptions I doubt it's breaking even.

and even if he made money form subs, he would spend it on hosting for main page, ad rates are so low these days, it is insane(well, actually, they are in line, what they used to be was insane[ly high]....
 
A website like this is lucky to be around, its a far different story than two or so years ago, people should be thankful and not be bitchy.
 
I like the AT forums and I don't mind waiting for the pages to load. It gives me time to talk to my family, play with the dogs, make dinner, work on computers, or get a soda/cup of coffee. Life is too short to be in a big hurry.

The biggest reason people come here is for the forums and it is the people who post who make the forums. Is the post of someone who is not a subscriber any less valuable than that of a subscriber?

More power to you subscribers who don't have the time to wait. Your lives are busy and you have other things to do, also.

I would rather see more advertising with no subscriptions so that Anand could upgrade his servers for greater speed.
 
I see no point in subscribing right now. It is more than fast enough on my cable modem. The minute that I have to start paying to use a website is when I stop using that site. Anand can make all the cash he wants off Anandtech. I will not complain that he wants to make money. I just will not help contribute to it, thats all.

Yea, I know people say "if you don't like it leave". Call other users asswipes (bit childish there IMO.) But they are just stating what it is that they feel. They don't have to leave, they just will not help Anand fill his pockets. As much as you would like to think that Anand makes this site, its not true. The users of the site is what makes this site so great. Anand just owns it. When/if people <b>have</b> to start paying to use anandtech I think you will see a mass exodus. It will be a shell of what it once was. With out all the people who contribute to this site, it is nothing more than just anouther review site.

Thats how I look at it anyhow.
