I've thought of subscribing, but to tell you the truth the slowness of the forums doesnt bother me all that much. Then I get to thinking I should subscribe just to help Anand out. Then I remember I have no money...

<< I see no point in subscribing right now. It is more than fast enough on my cable modem. The minute that I have to start paying to use a website is when I stop using that site. Anand can make all the cash he wants off Anandtech. I will not complain that he wants to make money. I just will not help contribute to it, thats all.

Yea, I know people say "if you don't like it leave". Call other users asswipes (bit childish there IMO.) But they are just stating what it is that they feel. They don't have to leave, they just will not help Anand fill his pockets. As much as you would like to think that Anand makes this site, its not true. The users of the site is what makes this site so great. Anand just owns it. When/if people have to start paying to use anandtech I think you will see a mass exodus. It will be a shell of what it once was. With out all the people who contribute to this site, it is nothing more than just anouther review site.

Thats how I look at it anyhow.

Do you people not comprehend the financial situation this forum was in? It cost SIGNFICANTLY more to operate than it brought in through ad revenue. IIRC it was red to the tune of $250K a year. The $30 a year I spend to be a subscriber is nothing, I paid it once & promptly forgot about it. I'll do the same when this year runs out. 250,000/30 = 8334 subscribers. I don't know how many have subscribed, nor do I really care. If he makes money, great. More power to him.

The model the internet has been operating under is fatally flawed, & is bound to self-destruct if it is not replaced.

Here's a good read for those who don't realize the truth

Fill Anands pockets? Maybe two or three years ago. Many people should be thankful this site is still around.

<< I'd try to get the most out of my $30.00 and you can only imagine how much more I'd be addicted to the forums >>

Yes, we're all cringing at the very thought of it.

If you subscribe (pay money) to a website for faster access (or access, period) while non-subscribers get slower access (or no access), then you are only hastening the day when any website worth frequenting will only be accessible through subscription (you pay for it).

The whole idea of the internet was free communication of information. I don't blame Anand for trying to recoup his losses (or make money), but if he can't get the advertising revenue to maintain his site then maybe it should wither away as so many others have. The people here will find somewhere else to congregate as long as they remain stalwart in their resolve to not PAY for internet website access.

OK. Let's have all the "Go somewhere else" freaks attack me for my viewpoint.

I've been an AT subscriber since the first day it was offered (Nov 1, 2001 I think) and considering I'm getting 3 years free (thanks to the Hot Deals forum), I think it's well worth my $2.50 a month.

Recently I found out just how slow forums.anandtech.com is, my wife was browsing the forums on her rig and I was wondering why it's sooooooooooooo f'ing slow. Then I noticed the URL forums.anandtech.com instead of my subscriber.anandtech.com

and it's nice not having annoying ads, 1,000 PM limit and the SPEED is awesome.
