My NEC is better than all the HP's I've ever had the misfortune to use.

Actually, I've never owned an HP. My employers and now clients were cursed with them.

They all keep giving their HP's to me after they replace them. I throw the silly things away.

Your mileage will vary.

Been using an HP600C for almost 6 years now and it?s still in great shape. Also picked up a couple of Epson 480SXU printers in a two for one promo ($60) for backup purposes and the print quality is excellent. As for my primary printer, I?d buy an HP again in a flash.

I just bought a HP 932c after replacing my lex 3200.
The plastic carrier that holds the ink cartdiges just snapped on me :(

however this new HP is absolutely awesome!
The chassis is metal, giving it some weight, plus it's got an envelope slot....and damm it prints fast AND good too :)

The cartdiges seem rather large, and the heads are larger in surface area than my old lex's.
I love my HP :D

I'm an HP convert :Q :D

The Canon I owned before SUCKED. I sent it in for repairs to Canon at least twice and it still didn't work. Threw that thing away!

I'm happy with my Epson 740 except that it's kinda loud and it takes a while to turn on (especially if I haven't turned it on in a day or so).

So my next one will be either an Epson or HP probably.

edit: Hah turn ON not OFF. :)

I use an HP DeskJet 930C. It's fantastic; the photographs I've printed from it are beautiful.

My old printer was a DeskJet 600C -- it's still kicking, we must have had it for at least 6 or 7 years. I think it could probably survive World War III.

For starters, I'll never buy another bubble jet printer. Ink costs too much, you go through it too fast, and they print too slow for their cost.

I've been buying the Samnsung ML-4500 for about $150. It's a small footprint laser printer that spits out around 8PPM. It even comes with a parallel port cable.

Very nice printer for the money.

It also has a very similar appearance to an HP Laserjet 1100. It looks very similar, and the toner drums are very, very similar as well. Could it be a rebadged HP for half the price? Hmmmmm...

Also, NEC makes some nice laser printers as well. I've got a Superscript 1800 that is a workhorse. It cranks out about 18PPM and also does duplexing. I got the printer for about $750. An equally powerful HP would run me easily over $1,000.

I think that HP is way overpriced for what their products offer.

My Epson 780 (which was a RMA replacement for the Epson 777 that I had) sucks.. It sounds like rattling bolts and crap.. I would definately go with something other than HP or Epson.. They're really trying to kill us with ink costs.

I would probably get a Kyocera Printer. I need a network laser printer for my house, and this one seems a lot better than an hp.

HP's slipping when it comes to inkjet printers I see their only real competition as Epson and Lexmark.

I owned an Epson 740 and even though it cost $220 back in 1998 it was well worth every penny. Nice size, fast, loud, came with USB worked great with Windows and Mac.

My current laser printer is the BEST BUDGET LASER PRINTER ever invented, the Brother HL-1240.

So if I were to buy a printer I'd guy:

Inkjet - Epson or Lexmark
Laser - Brother maybe HP

My Epson opens up two applications before it prints. It takes about a minute for it to warm up before it can print anything.

The image quality is worth it...but in 5 years...I may chuck it out the window.

Love me Epson 880 right now though:)

I have an Epson Photo 700, wife has a Lexmark Z11, parents have a Canon Bubblejet 610 or 620, and I have an HP 932 at work. Humorously enough the 2 most trouble free have been the HP and the Lexmark. My epson is ok but it for some reason has random ink stains that take a few pages to stop. Thank god ink is so dirt cheap for it. My parent's Bubblejet is ok but it does some wierd stuff and chews through ink like there is no tomorrow. If my printer died tomorrow and I had to go out and get a new one, odds are I'd get an HP 932. Only real problem I've experienced with the 930/2's is the print cartridges will go whacky if the pins get dirty. Place I work is terribly dirty and we have to have air purifiers in every office. Even then at least once a year gotta take an eraser and clean off the pins that interface with the ink cartridge. It's annoying but I suppose most people won't have their printers get dirty enough for that to happen.

I've had an HP4L for about 8 years now. I hope they are still making them as good. My dad just bought a 1200, so I'll find out.

Just got my GF the Epson 880.
It replaced an Epson 660. It actually runs alot quieter
than the 660 (glad of that). That was my biggest gripe with
the 660, way too loud. We'll just have to see how it
hold up.

If it's an inkjet anything BUT HP. The 6xx series were the worst! I don't know about the recent models though, if they changed the mechanics any... it's the paper feed mechinism which must use the cheapest plastic and rubber grommets they can find, because they just don't hold up.

I'm not too fond of Lexmark lately, but, that's because of the drivers. They do not, currently, allow a Win2K Client to print across a network to a Win9x printhost. (I found a workaround, but, it's not pretty).

I've been happy using an Epson 740. Does everything perfect, and has held up well. I've heard about some of the recent problems with various models and print alignment...

In the end, it's luck of the draw. You don't know how bad it will be until sometime AFTER the warranty ends. Thus, I agree with the others, if you are doing serious printing inkjets are not the way to go. They're cheap and they do the job--mostly. Just be prepared to replace them every few years, and the ink--every few pages. :)

just got a new printer - the Lexmark Z42. It was an open box at best buy, got em to knock it down to 60, and then there's a 30 dollar rebate on top of that. 30 bucks for the whole thing with black and color ink cartridges - I might as well get the same deal next time, it's cheaper than the ink.

that was off topic - I do like HP printers, we have a scanner printer combo and it works great.

It you're worth anything as a designer you would choose an Epson 1280! HP's are good but not as good in comparison to Epsons!

No. I love my HP937 or whatever-the-heck-number it is. The one with the fold-up paper tray on the bottom.
