If it's an inkjet anything BUT HP. The 6xx series were the worst! I don't know about the recent models though, if they changed the mechanics any... it's the paper feed mechinism which must use the cheapest plastic and rubber grommets they can find, because they just don't hold up.
I'm not too fond of Lexmark lately, but, that's because of the drivers. They do not, currently, allow a Win2K Client to print across a network to a Win9x printhost. (I found a workaround, but, it's not pretty).
I've been happy using an Epson 740. Does everything perfect, and has held up well. I've heard about some of the recent problems with various models and print alignment...
In the end, it's luck of the draw. You don't know how bad it will be until sometime AFTER the warranty ends. Thus, I agree with the others, if you are doing serious printing inkjets are not the way to go. They're cheap and they do the job--mostly. Just be prepared to replace them every few years, and the ink--every few pages.
