I went through the process for an upper level job, and turned the offer down at the end of the process about 2 years ago. The job and they weren't what I thought they were.

No.

1) They don't pay enough.

2) Too many Type A personalities in one concentrated place. I need some diversity.

3) At my job I am a big fish in a small pond, at Google I would be employee #32121.

4) They pretty much peaked in terms of new ideas. Some stuff is cool like Android and Chrome but those teams are hyper-competitive to get on. Unless you're one of the top 100 algorithm guys in the country you'll writing some shitty clone of a Facebook or Twitter feature. Not worth dealing with #1 - 3 for a job like that.

Would I? Probably, but I don't see it ever happening.

1) Their closest offices are over 100 miles away, and
2) I'm not about to move to the Mountain View area to be close to the job,
3) I'm not going to drive 100+ miles each way for the salary I'd get,
4) With my current skill set, they wouldn't pay me enough to justify moving close enough to work for them.

I'd do it if I were you, just for the experience. Having it on your resume should instantly open other doors for you if you decide to leave.

congrats! a lot of my friends, including does that are currently working for google, ms and intel or looking to jump ship to facebook.

some say goog is already too big and facebook is still fairly small and has huge potential. either way, I'm sure you'll do fine 🙂

In two years working for Facebook will be like working for AOL when it peaked.

I feel like they pay a pretty decent amount from what I know.

Honestly, this is possible. Look at myspace. These kinds of things can come and go very quickly. I think myspace is still big but I frankly don't know anybody on it and facebook is all anybody talks about, personally and in the media. But its quick rise could be supplanted by another.

I'd work for google although there is an attraction in being in smaller companies being a greater chance of working in multiple capacities, although not to the same concentrated point as if you're doing one role.

Before myspace was friendster, and add LinkedIn somewhere in the mix.

Things go really fast, imo facebook is keeping up because they've kept up with the redevelopment aspect of it. Apps, photo uploading, video clips, so on.

Back in early 2006 when I went on the facebook wagon, there was none of that stuff there is today. Except comments and photos, that was it. There was no such live feed thing.

I assume you're asking if you should work for them since I wouldn't personally because I like my current situation.

If you're looking to make lots of money, Google isn't really the place anymore since they're a big company now. It was a different story in 2000 or even 2002 or so.

As a large company, it'll be the typical cog in the large machine but they do have some perks that you probably already know about that the typical large company doesn't have. If it's your first or second job out of college, it's as good a place as any to learn more about the industry and gain industry experience for the resume.

In general, the people there should know their stuff. Obviously, there will be exceptions in all large companies. Later on, if you want, there'll probably be opportunities to take a few buddies there with you and form a smaller company.

If you're more of a small company type person, then obviously, you may want to look for more opportunities.

Yes if you actually work for their design/engineering departments.

No for IT/operation/datacenter bullshit, network operations are always treated as 2nd class citizens at software firms and employees are most likely expected to carry a pager and rotate on weekends.

Facebook has managed to keep itself relevant for quite a long time. Pretty surprising when you look at previous social networking sites.

Shit, have I been on FB for over 6 years now?

I don't think Facebook is dying anytime soon, or do I see its audience going elsewhere right now. How long it took users to abandon AOL long past its time in the spotlight is testament to this.

As for working for Facebook, all to the really interesting challenges have already been solved (scaling, distributed computing, etc). I don't know what interesting work they would have to offer. Plus the company is going the wrong direction in terms of user privacy and features (a "like" button is innovation?). Maybe if you can get in on the IPO that may be worth something, but by time the options vest Facebook may have already busted.

Yes but it'll never happen as I work in a completely different field.

I wouldn't be surprised if software engineers carry a pager, too. They do at Amazon.
