No matter how badly you want to see that person suffer as much as your family had, what they teach you in school still applies: Two wrongs dont make a right.
Killing is killing period. The death penalty is just a legal way of doing it.
Plus, life in prison would be worse IMO. To have to live with the guilt and knowledge of what that person did would be punishment enough for me.
You are giving people in general too much credit and assuming they have the same capacity for those emotions. Murderers dont usually grasp the concept of guilt, compassion, etc.
Well normal human beings have those feelings. While they may have less of those emotions, I'm sure with time anyone would feel it. Come on. We see YAGT threads and guys going sniff sniff on ATOT all day long. We're nerds for goodness sakes. We have fewer emotions than the rest of the world, yet we still have our girl drama, etc and we get sad, depressed etc. We get these after a few days... I think locking up someone for life and they'll probably get that feeling in a few days if not years.... Come on.
20 years in prison and you still feel you were justified with murder? You gotta be some major psycho..
It isnt that the guilty person would feel justified with committing murder, it justs that on the norm I think murders (not all) are predispostioned to not know how to feel certain emotions.
Hell, I have met people on the street and in daily life that just dont seem to be able to grasp certain "feeling" emotions.
On another note, prison for some of the dregs of society is a better life than what they had in the real world.
