Maybe if I'm an old fart w/ nothing better to do.

I would to save a friend/family/relative.

But a stranger, hmm... I guess it would depend on the circumstances. If there was an explanation/reason how my walking 500miles would save their life I might do it, but it'd have to be pretty damn logical--and I can't think of any... that wouldn't involve saving my life as well... and I would to save my life.

if the circumstances make it very clear that i should do it eg i'm the only person who is able to do this and if i dont he/she would die. and it doesn't put my own life in danger.

If I knew that my walking 500 miles was truly the distinguishing difference between life and death for this person I'd have to be all but a worthless boot-magot to say "sorry, can't be bothered".
