Would you support a law to ban cellphone use while driving EXCEPT for handsfree devices?

many studies have shown that handsfree or not isn't ther problem, it's the activity of having a phone conversation. Having the phone in your hand or not didn't make much difference IIRC.

it's already the law in NY, and the people come here with their ridiculous bluetooth earphone deals and it looks hilarious

I would support such a law. I don't know how many idiots I've been behind, who were either driving all over the road, or slowing things down, while talking or messing with their phone. We recently had a teen girl get killed in a head on collision, while texting and driving!

I'm ambivalant towards such a law. It was a law in NJ, NY, and CT, and it didn't bother me any. In fact, I actually use my earpiece and have a conversation with people when i drive long distances b/c it keeps me awake, and makes me less drowsy. Now if its a busy road, heavy traffic, i get off the phone, and focus on traffic.

And by the way, I still see people on their phones in NJ, NY, and CT where it hands free is required. And people still don't drive any safer in those 3 states with the law,.

I love that newest of fads - texting while driving or rather the driver is texting while the car is more or less going wherever the hell it meanders in the meantime.

That sucks, man. Surely the Space Program is going to suffer.

Seriously, if you text and drive, it's time to replace the captain of your brain ship, because he's asleep at the wheel. I can't imagine a dumber thing to do while driving.

I would only support such a law if it banned hands-free devices as well, since studies have shown that they're just as dangerous as regular cellphone usage, and both are more dangerous than adjusting the radio/talking to a passenger.

Here is a link to the stupid, yet avoidable tragedy. :(

A driver ran a red light while talking on his cell phone. He blew through the intersection and tore off my front bumper. I saw him out of the corner of my eye and slammed on my brakes- if I hadn't, he would have t-boned me and I'd be dead.

He crashed into the median and smashed his front end. I got out of my car to pick up my bumper cover and walked over to his car to see what was going on. He was hunched over on his side looking for his cell phone on the floor. When he found it, he held it up to me and said, "you wanna use my phone to call the police?"

Stupid law!

When they outlaw eating, shaving, smoking and small lap dogs while driving then I'll be on board for cell phone banning.

Stupid nanny state lawmakers think they know best for us!

I personally think all cellphone use in a moving vehicle should be against the law. You simply cannot perform the task at hand if you are speaking on the phone, handsfree or not.

If you want an example, try playing your FPS video game when your girl is talking to you.

I've done that before. And I got a great Kill/Death Ratio too

Likewise, then my girlfriend chewed me out for not listening to her
I do both all the time.

I fully support it, and i think hands-free should be banned too because you have to screw around with the earpieces and everything... and its been proven they arent more safe.

I could see *maybe* an in-car speakerphone type setup where you hit one button, talk, and hit one button to hang up.

I don't think it needs to be a NEW law, but they should enforce all of the above under current negligent driving statutes.

I agree, one law to rule them all.

When someone is driving, they shouldn't be able to do anything else.

Sometimes we need to lose some freedom to protect us from the idiots who are barely competent enough to be driving at all, let alone multi-tasking. ;)

That's odd, I do it all the time. And I've never been in an accident that was my fault.

How about this: Quit trying to take someone else's freedoms away because it makes you feel better.

Wow, that sounds like the exact same thing this guy I once knew used to say about drinking and driving before I had to go ID him down at the morgue. Yeah, he is sure FREE now. Shame that some people feel so entitled these days.

This is quite apparent just by looking at the poll results.
20 no votes is more than I would have expected, but then I almost forgot were I was for a moment. ;)

studies have shown that talking on hands-free devices is just as distracting as talking with a normal cellphone next to your ear.

I'd support a ban on all automobile retardation, including talking of a phone, shaving, putting on make-up, etc (anything beyond basic drinking, changing radio stations, etc)

I was in a Taxi once and the driver was playing solitaire on a Blackberry.

Studies have proven that hands free devices dont make driving while talking any safer. It's the distraction thats the problem, and therefore I dont approve of a law like this.

DO you have sources or links for those studies? I would be interested in reading them.

Thanks.

I say yes, and mandate regular testing of attentiveness/alertness of driving while on the phone.
