I'm really considering a gas scooter as an alternative to a bike..since they:

a) are self propelled
b) go MUCH faster than a bike (some go up to 40 mph..meaning I'd be passing people in LA traffic left and right)
c) are smaller and compact
d) because of c) would be easier to keep by my side and be less prone to theft
e) fun factor..when you're not being seen by others

The only thing is the whole geekiness factor, which being me as it is, won't help my cause any ;)

Which scooter? The one's you sit on? Or those new funky standing ones?

I wouldn't mind riding the standing ones, but the sitting ones.......no

You mean the Segway?

Those technically aren't scooters.

What type of scooter, is what it depends on for me...your typical Vespa ain't extremely cheap, but I think the retro look is cute, and to have something handy that won't cost much to maintain or fill up, would be great...on campus, at least. To zip from here to there, saving 10-15 minutes at a time, would be worth it...plus with all the asians on campus, some of the girls are bound to think it's cute too. ;)

I have the regular scooters that aren't self-propelled. I use them for going to the store which is ~15 minutes away walking. I get there in 8 minutes, scootering. Then I just carry the scooter around (when it's compact) in the store, then leave. It saves me an extra 7 minutes each way, so not bad.

I wouldn't mind riding a scooter around, wearing a Silk suit, with Italian loafers, blaring Hall & Oates.

I'd get an old Honda Elite or something. The Vespas are very cool but you have to have have that certain personal style to ride it without looking silly

I would and did.
Check your state DMV laws. In NY you didn't used to need a motorcycle license for anything under 50cc.

I think Eli builds and modifies those standup scooters, so he may have some advice.
He should be along shortly, as soon as he sees "scooter" in your title.

scooters is just one thing no one should ride even if it is faster. Ride a bike like everyone else does
