I voted for the wrong thing since I didn't read the poll, which presents the opposite question of the topic title.

no, OP heard the old rumor, not the unofficial agreed upon numbers

I heard the news this morning they said between $300 and $1200......

Its the news, so its probably wrong.

I'd take it without guilt because I know I will be using it to buy something I like which is how it is intended to be used. I read a brief summary as to why they are doing it, but I am not certain if it will work or not because I really am not convinced that enough people will just go buy something with it instead of paying off debt or saving.

you'd be quite surprised.

I hope so being that the money is going to be given out regardless.

show me anywhere in the Constitution where it allows a federal income tax

I suggest not doing it, highly suggest they dont do it but there is no way I am going to tell them to keep it if they do give it out.

An amendment only ratified in 1916 and was originally supposed to be about 3% for most people. Prohibition was the second amendment after this one.

"The Congress shall have Power To lay and collect Taxes, Duties, Imposts and Excises, to pay the Debts and provide for the common Defence and general Welfare of the United States; but all Duties, Imposts and Excises shall be uniform throughout the United States."

Since when are these taxes uniform?

Federal Income tax is now nothing more than a blank checkbook for our government to waste.

I pay something like $350 in state and federal income tax every two weeks. That doesn't include all the sales tax, gas tax, property tax, taxes on utilities, etc. that I pay. I'll take some of it back without thinking twice about it.

We don't know yet. That amount isn't even set in stone if I am not mistaken. Most likely, I would say that it will differ for a lot of people but at the very least it will differ for single vs married couples.

some published reports of the unofficial agreement say everyone that has at least $3000 of taxable income would get at least $300

hmm, now I just hope I made enough last year ($3000 minimum it sounds like). Actually, doing a quick calculation, it sounds like I will.. however, it will be interesting because the majority of my income last year was my monthly stipend from AROTC. And it was untaxed. So now I remain neutral in regards to tax season: I probably owe a decent amount (for me) in taxes, but I may also get to enjoy this little bonus stipend.

the whole point of this is to help small businesses, which in turn helps the entire economy. Give the people money that appears 'free', and most will spend it. Right back into the economy, which is the plan. Hell, we could be looking at the government basically infusing somewhere around $40 billion straight into the economy. Now, I punched in totally estimated numbers: 180million (out of 300k US citizens) x $450. got somewhere around $80 billion. The 180million could be quite a bit off (merely throwing a number out there to represent eligible citizens), but even though that number may be off, I suspect the average for stipends handed out will be greater than $450. $300 is the currently accepted minimum, and $1200 is the accepted max handout. Obviously income will play a role in determining the stipend. So, together, the two seem like they could put a rough estimate as to what this will cost the government. With my numbers, that's $80 billion. If half of those people spend the stipend (what the government wants), that could be the $40 billion I mentioned earlier. Honestly, that's a nice little gift from the government to the economy, and that kind of money, which will probably go 1/4 to mom and pop stores, 3/4 to the giants... will very much help the economy, well at least stave off a recession for some time ('some time', as in, hell if I know how long).

What kind of moron would reject a government handout? It's YOUR money, since you put it in there with your taxes!

Besides... If you don't take it, some crack addict welfare mom with six kids probably will. A lot of us ATOT'ers won't be getting it anyway, since the income cap is $75,000 for singles and $150,000 for families.

WTF is up with that... $75,000 is below the medium income for much of Connecticut :(

the circle of money?

First post contains the point of this "stimulus" plan.

Majority of people will take this check and put it towards their mortgage or car loan. Money that you borrowed from the bank that the bank borrowed from the federal reserve. So it is basically a circle.

Also: Think of this... Only those who filed taxes get the money... (This is key) There are thousands of non-taxpayers out there that might change their habits if they see something like this come down the pipe. This stimulates change for these people to start filing taxes.

the question though (in regards to bread and circuses), is... how the hell can this kind of problem be tackled head on? Gotta come from the side, and the side is a little slower but more effective route. Of course, if this is the only action taken, then the economy is still screwed... but if this is just the start, and they continue with grander plans down the road, then that might work. But really, it seems impossible to just 'fix' the economy in one fell swoop. Takes a lot of little and big adjustments, and a little hope the citizens and corporations can do something too.

I'd wipe my ass with it and leave the remains on the front of it on a semi-famous celebrities windshield. Someone like Tom Arnold, or Ed Asner.

Some of what you say is true, but you do know what you are asking for right? The federal government would have to shut down.

Nationwide sales tax is the most conceivable. Fairtax etc. However! However! there should be wording built into the plan that covers spending money while in the U.S. purchasing from those outside the U.S.

To any extent a nationwide sales tax would be a big boom to the government bottom line due to the following...

1. Pimps and hoes will now pay taxes
2. Illegal immigrants will now pay taxes
3. Online purchases will now be taxed from state to state purchases
4. Foreigners will now pay taxes

People this is the money that builds schools, rest areas, highways, protects our everglades, redwoods etc.

This is not an advance...this is a tax rebate...free money.

Some people who didn't spend a dime in taxes will still get this(if you only make $3000 you don't pay federal taxes). So to them, it is free money.

I will gladly take this money as I have paid my dues.
