I am rather "thin" (135/5'9") but AM (rather) strong for my size.

My choice. I think extreme "muscle boys" look silly. :p
Bwa ha ha ha.. I knew from your big talk in the other thread you were just a little beanstalk runt :p

Look strong, and my initial impression of the results of this poll is that the people on this board look weak but prefer to see themselves as strong to accomodate for their looking weak. In reality they are probably weak looking and weak in reality :)

Looks are, of course, more important than functionality when it comes to weight lifting for most people. Bodybuilding seems to be the initial goal of working out, except in cases where you're doing it for sports (likely for a 16 year old; not likely for a 35 year old), or legitimately want strength.

Of course I'd rather look good than look crappy and although I'm fairly strong I realize that it's not put to use much beyond lifting weights (which is a useless use of strength!).
i knew guys with more muscle than me who couldn't do half the pushups, couldn't beat me in an arm wrestle, etc..
Pushups are a great indicator of muscular endurance and strength vs. size, but a poor indicator of raw strength. I could double my bench press and probably increase my pushups by less than 50%. And then arm wrestling is partly strength but also _hugely_ technique and reach.

Being strong without looking it is kind of like going to a beach but being a top-notch marathon runner; you can be top of your field but nobody cares because you still look like crap :)

Well, I look stronger than I really am right now, and no-one ever messes with me, So I say look strong.

Although, I think my wife would rather me be scrawny, w/ a six pack, but I'm an endo-morph... I have NEVER, no matter how well I ate of how much I worked out/ran/etc, been able to get rid of my little pooch, I can get it smaller, but the damn thing jsut never goes away. So I mainly focus on building my Chest and arms (and legs on occasion, but my legs are already pretty big), the bigger they look, the smaller my gut looks :)

When I was boxing, I weighed 145# but could bench 300#. I'm 6'2". I'm a more comfortable 180# now. I'm hyperactive and don't eat much meat or sugar. Definitely prefer strength to bulk. 145# was not very healthy, but to maintain mass I have to eat a lot of food.

scrawny but strong.

you dont want to look like those body builders, huge but not really strong, at least not strong for their apperance.
big and buff, you a f@cking clutz, you're way to big to do anything.

Chicks not always like the huge muscles.

I'm not sure I understand all you people wanting to be strong but look weak to be tricky. How often do you get into fights?

Look at the topic's title before you post :p

Would you rather look real strong/buff and be weak OR look rather weak and scrawny but be real strong?

There are only 2 choices.

I'd love to look scrawny and piss off people enough to stuff me in their trunk....

I can be an evil Jack-In-The Box when we get to our destination, rip their arms off and bang their woman :) Then ride back to town in their IROC or Caddy.

I am all chubby now in a way (about 15-20lbs overweight)....but when I am in shape I don't get bulky but I am very strong (about 175lbs and can curl about 150...benching I don't max due to a weak shoulder but I work out with 185-200lbs...or used to about 6 - 12 month ago )

As far as muscle size = strength not so.....look at Bruce Lee.

they're sort of loosely correlated. a lot of body builders are much less
strong than you'd think.

i've met men at powerlifting contests who weighed less than 150 lbs
and weren't particularly hypertrophied, but bench pressed 450.

I have to agree with this -- looks can be deceiving (for both genders)

Much more important to be strong than to look it. If you're strong, other men will sense it and they won't fvck with you as much, no matter how you look. More respect = more confidence = more chiX0rs.

5'6" and 160lbs doesn't make you chubby necessarily.

He is more than likely built like a tank....unless of course you think because you aren't no one else can be.

When I was 190lbs people said I must be fat too until they saw me (5'10.5")...I like to stay around 175-180 though with a little bodyfat on me still, at the 190lb mark with a little bodyfat I'd have been more like 210lbs probably and still not chubby.

Sure it does unless you are completely musclebound . . . 5'6" is pretty short - you cant compare since you are 4-1/2" taller . . . :p

And did you believe the 6% bf also?
