I wouldn't be doing my own oil changes if I could afford a $50k car.

I'm sure someone already mentioned this...but doesn't the dumbass know they change your oil and do EVERYTHING that needs to be done for free for the first 3 years or so?

Mobil 1's TrySyn is not the current formulation. SuperSyn is. TrySyn was phased out a couple years ago.

There is a big problem.

I would have a few weeks ago. Not now that I know what I know now.

so? supertech is made by pennzoil.
No, it isn't.

Supertech is not a bad oil, and their filters are good as well. Personally I use Castrol GTX but it's just preference.

There's not much that makes Wal Mart's products any worse than products you find anywhere else.
Sure, it's not bad compared to say, Castrol GTX, and Quaker State.

The fact is that there are dozens of conventional oils that are better than SuperTech's FullSyn.

Does that count for ones that come over from Germany?

BMW does come with free oil changes, but at fixed intervals. The first one comes at around 12000-13000 miles, so perhaps this guy wishes to change the oil at around 6000 miles.

:)
Your "expert" is out of touch with reality then. Any modern synthetic oil can be mixed with conventional oil and an owner can switch between the two at any point. What your "expert" told you has not been true since the 1970's.

This guy imported this car to U.S. by himself (in other words, exported it to U.S. from Germany himself), BMW of USA's free service doesn't cover him.

The stuff is cheap for synthetic ... just saw it for $11.66 for 5 quarts. But some of you guys say it's lousy? Linkage?

Well, looks like I'm sticking to good ol' Mobil1... SuperSyn is good stuff.

Doesn't BMW and a few other companies have an agreement so that it's the "recommended" brand of oil for those cars? I know that it's recommended for Vipers, Vettes, and many other cars.

That's not true...I went to Wal-Mart about a month ago. I got some bulk pack of Remmington target rounds there. Now, I've found an on-line supplier who has better and cheaper rounds, so I have no need to go back to Wally World.

Parking my SAAB there was bad enough.
Where? Looking for cheap 2 3/4 loads for my browning a5's (man do I love my semi auto 12 gauges!)

Much to my surprise, Havoline, Valvoline and Chevron make some excellent synthetics, right up there with the ultra-premium synthetics(AMSOil, RedLine, Neo).

yeah, it is.
Am certain it is not.

If it is, they do not make it to the same specs as the Pennzoil brand, so it does not matter.

Pennzoil's LongLife HD conventional oil is better than Walmart's SuperTech FullSyn.

SuperTech FullSyn:

VI = 148
PP = -40ºF
FP = 440ºF
HT/HS = 2.90(higher better)
NOACK = 13%
TBN = 5.0

Pennzoil LongLife HD:
VI = 144
PP = -38ºF
FP = 425ºF
HT/HS = 3.50
NOACK = 13%
TBN = 12.0

So it's actually kind-of a tradeoff. The Pennzoil is much more shear stable, but the synthetic is stable to a higher temperature. However, the LongLife HD will potentially last much longer with its 12 TBN. Remember that we are comparing a conventional oil to a cheap synthetic oil.

WalMart's conventional SuperTech is even worse(as expected):
VI = 140
PP = -29ºF
FP = 410ºF
HT/HS = 2.90
NOACK = 13%
TBN = 5.0

It is sad when a Synthetic is only marginally better than its conventional counterpart. Wal-Mart oil is crap. There are dozens of brands that are better. I don't know about the price for the specs, but I would rather spend a few more dollars per oil change.

I guess it could be worse. I guess you could be using Conoco HD Fleet Supreme, with its absolutely horrifying flash point of 372ºF. :Q

It boils down to the fact that oil is no different from anything else; you get what you pay for.

Interesting.

Well, that's just fine and dandy, but it doesen't mean anything since Pennzoil doesen't make the SuperTech oil to the same specs as the Pennzoil brand.

The Pennzoil brand is much better than either SuperTech or Quaker State, even though they may be made by the same company. Once again, it boils down to you get what you pay for.

The reason better oils are more expensive is because they are more highly refined, more R&D has gone into the additive package, etc. They simply can't afford not to charge more.
