Maybe cause they don't want to be a candy ass and change it themselves. Don't YOU change your own oil?

I think you missed the point. The point was why was this guy having the oil changed (whether by himself or by somewhere else) when BMW will do it for free in the first 3 year.

5 Series? Or all BMWs? I know there are some made in the USA. Z4, X3 & X5 come to mind.

Switching from synthetic to regular or from regular to synthetic won't hurt a thing. The same goes for adding one to the other.

And 5w-30 IS acceptable for most BMW engines. Looks like the op is wrong on both counts.

Yeah, my Mitsubishi prefers 5w-30, even thou it is better to use 10w-30 in the summer (100+ degrees).

The X3 isn't made in Germany or the USA. It's built in Austria IIRC :p

I got the oil changed in my Passat at Walmart, they are cheap but lines are extremely long here unless you go right when they open.

They didn't have Mobil 1 0w40 like I wanted but the 5w30 works just as well.

They do at least if they are like Audi. I love not paying for Oil changes.

So? I'm a car guy that has done major work on his car with friends. All of us prefer free oil changes! Free is free. Not like an Audi dealer uses sh!t oil.

The car wasn't imported by BMW of USA. The guy exported it from Germany to U.S. by himselft. BMW of USA has no responsibility.

That is what I thought. If there were free oil changes available I am pretty sure this guy would be jumping on that.

Wal-Mart's synthetic rates lower than most name-brand conventional oils in independant oil analysis. I would not put it in my lawnmower, let alone a new BMW.
