Would you put WalMart motor oil in your brand new imported BMW 5 series?

A came home today and noticed the guy next door was changing the oil on his BMW which be brought over from Germany after getting home from deployment last month. So I walk over to him to BS for a bit, and eventually look at the oil he is putting in his 50k+ car. SuperTech Full Synthetic 5w-30? SuperTech?? that is Wal Mart oil, and I am not sure 5w-30 is even the right grade for those new BMW's.

Why wouldn't you spring for a better oil than freaking Wal Mart oil in your brand new expensive import?

I'm pretty sure that oil is made by a major manufacturer and then resold under the Wal-Mart brand name. It's not like the store Wal-martified it and poured sand in it or something ;).

That said, I'm kind of picky about the oil I put in my car. I want to know exactly what brand goes into it. If I found out that "Super-Tech" brand oil was actually Mobil 1 in a SuperTech bottle but for $1-2 cheaper per quart, I'd be on that like white on rice.

Why would someone be changing their oil in a BRAND NEW BMW 5-Series?? I thought they came with 3 years free maintenance?

I wonder why actually produces the oil for Walmart. Mebbe it is the oil blend of Mobil1 (before the current TriSynth blend which wasn't truly "FULL")

Supertech is not a bad oil, and their filters are good as well. Personally I use Castrol GTX but it's just preference.

There's not much that makes Wal Mart's products any worse than products you find anywhere else.

sure

it isn't like walmart makes motor oil

it is only refined in a few places in the US, then a label gets stuck on the bottle that might say walmart or penzoil or whatever

*edit*
ok , if it is synthetic, it isn't refined, but the principle is the same, it isn't made by Walmart , a "real" oil company makes it and rebrands it, all big companies in many fields do the same thing

my dad worked for Del Monte and i worked for him in the summers in high school, i would go into the warehouse from the packing plant and see all kinds of labels on corn/beans along with the cans labeled "Del Monte" ,they would pack/label for grocery stores and others

From an expert:
"as long as he gets the right grade, there will be no problem. Some reputable is making that oil for them. APIGL, SF, FE are all ratings on the oil. If he was using regular oil in the correct grade he cannot switch to synthetic and vise versa, but if he stays with what he started with, it is all good. "

Does that count for ones that come over from Germany?

That's not true...I went to Wal-Mart about a month ago. I got some bulk pack of Remmington target rounds there. Now, I've found an on-line supplier who has better and cheaper rounds, so I have no need to go back to Wally World.

Parking my SAAB there was bad enough.
