I would most definately pay for the surgery, assuming that after healing, he won't be in pain. I would do it without a moments hesitation if it were my own dog.

Dude, that's a hard f*&king decision. I absolutely LOVE my dog, Buttons. She's 6 years old and she's got another 8 years left in her. $5,000 out of pocket is worth 8 more years to me "IF" the surgery is guaranteed to work. I'd manage. I'd give up some frivilous crap, I'd stop eating out so often, I'd give up buying my little gadgets and stuff.
I care about her THAT much. Correct, she IS a dog, but she is a family member.

just replace a pet right?
Perfectly healthy dogs are being euthanized because owner's like you don't want to pay to spay or neuter them.

What is money for, if not to protect those you love? :heart:Originally posted by: Descartes
Without the slightest hesitation.
For me, with any of my pets, as it was with my wife, "for better or for worse, in sickness and in health, 'till death do us part."
Imho, there may not be a Joe God, zip code heaven, but there IS a divine and indivisible spirit; and when we, man or pet, act as each other's protector, THAT is the divine spirit in action, and we are all the better for it.
We made a pact long ago, did man and dog, and it is one of the most beautiful and wisest things we have ever done.

The "bit of truth" with which you were raised is as ugy and deficent as your logic.Originally posted by: Excelsior

I just had to throw in a bit of truth after your idyllic post.
And I bet I love my dogs just as much as you love your pets, but seriously, this is 5K for an animal that will most likely not live longer than 12-15 years. The OP apparently really can't afford the money anyway.
I guess it all depends on how we are raised, because as much as my family loves its pets, we wouldn't ever spend $5000 on a pet. It just doesn't make sense when there are other dogs out there who deserve a good home just as much as the one you have now, and they don't need a $5000 operation.
Maybe if the dog was young and the operation had a very high rate of success I would pay.
Do you understand where I am coming from? No need to get so angry.

I knew a guy who paid 6k for his dog to have leg surgery...he makes about 70k a year
He's got a special bond with his dog. He got in a car accident and the dog saved him and pulled him out of the car a few years ago.
