I'd have to clear enough in about 5 years to retire on; even then it would be a tough decision. I am NOT a cold weather person. I know someone who lived in CA about that far north though (more west I think). He worked at a Cat plant up there, said he had a swimming pool that they were able to use several months of the year, and made very good money all things considered.

keep in mind that stuff costs a whole lot more.

I have a friend who used to live in Yellowknife NWT and everytime he would come back he would fill his luggage with consumer goods (detergent, soap, canned goods). The price was crazy 2-3 times the price down here.

His rent for a shared 600 sq ft apartment was $900 a month.

A plus is that you get the northern living allowance (cdn tax stuff).

I'd visit, but never live there. For one thing, I'm biased towards English. I don't want to see or hear any other language when I'm out and about. Up there they have English, French, and that native language with the weird alphabet.

Second, I like the sun and warm beaches.

Third, it's way too small and isolated.
