Good, however; that's for people who care about their eternal soul, not selfish pricks who don't give a shit about people in an overcrowded 3rd world nation, especially one that has taken so many American jobs.
Wouldn't using "caring for your eternal soul" as your motivation make one a selfish prick too? Or is it not selfish to care about your eternal soul?

No, I'm rather selfish, and I'm perfectly willing to admit it.
The vast majority of people are selfish, only some don't know it, other won't admit it.

Ya think?
Ask Jesus or Mohamed or Sri Krishna if caring about one's own eternal soul makes one a selfish prick.

eVGA 7600GT
4 GB RAM
17" samsung LCD - 40 watts in use, 3 watts on
standby.

ballpark guess for the base system - in the range
of 200-300 watts.

as far as "energy efficient" goes, the Athlon BE
chips come to mind.

though i believe the person who said this is laptop-
range power consumption, 100 watts.

having used the hand pump water pump myself,
i agree, nothing wrong with it. maybe that was
the wrong comparison. maybe electricity for
a refrigerator, is a better example, in terms of
the energy/electricity needs of people in other
countries.

i've been reading about massive energy shortages
in other countries, along with a few in the US,
England, etc.

i was also pummeled by some heat this summer,
in a second floor apartment with no AC. i was
counting every watt, turning the fridge off during
the hot hours, using gallon bottles of water to
help keep the fridge cold when the electricity
was off.

a related question - how much should Canada
sacrifice, in order to provide the United States
with electricity ? as it is, the tar sands operation
consumes massive amounts of water and totally
f*cks up the environment. it produces about
3 million barrels a day. in order to heat the
bitumen, they use natural gas.

is Canada obligated to expend water and natural gas,
so they can sell us oil at $90 a barrel ? what if
they decide that being able to take hot baths
is more important than providing that bit of
extra oil to the US ?

actually, via NAFTA, they are obligated. but,
NAFTA is a trade agreement, which can be
re-written.

it's very clear from looking at reports in the
energy industries that these kind of trade-offs
are occurring and will occur more. also, that
there is an inter-related ness involved. a finite
amount of water, a finite and declining amount
of fossil fuel energy sources to move the water
around.

Georgia could use some more right now,
and there's some states that got extra.

i looked at some property in Oregon last year.
one of the guys who would have been my
neighbor told me about neighbor#2,
who ripped out the pump neighbor #1 put,
legally, in the farm water canal they share.
neighbor #1 was 6 foot plus and in real good
shape; i was surprised neighbor #2 was messing
with his water pump.

it was mighty odd to see grown men fighting
over a small solar-powered pump in a small
town in Oregon.

Is this to limit total power use to 100 watts, or reduce total power use by 100 watts?

100W wouldn't even power a small refrigerator.

Also, 100W is ridiculous, the green people around here have a campaign to limit energy consumption and their goal is 2000W/house, 100W is silly. You would have thousands of elderly people dying every week during the summer without A/C to cool them. Hell, you wouldn't even have enough electricity to light your way from the bed to the bathroom, prolly fall on your ass trying to take a piss in the middle of the night.

Agreed. I know it makes me sound like a hateful American, but other countries depend on our aid too much. We have plenty of starving children right here at home.
Citizens of India need to learn about birth control.

If anyone comes up with a plan to limit my electricity and help Americans, I would listen.

If they want to get water, hand pumps work nicely.
They even have pumps that work for deep wells.

I always wonder why people in areas of high population that complain, we need electricity for water, or lighting, don't generate it themselves.
I actually saw a contraption made once from car alternators and bicycles.
Human power !

The true wasters of energy are the corporations.
Lets leave a whole office building lit when noone is there, yeah thats a good idea !

Or how about street lights.
Put motion sensors on them so they only come on when someone is there, instead of lighting every street and alley at 3 am.

Would I limit myself to 100 Watts a day for India?

F-NO!

Maybe if people in India would limit themselves to having 1 child per one man and woman so that they could begin work on reducing their massive poverty-inducing population density they would be able to focus less on subsistence and more on energy production.

India doesn't need electricity as much as it needs birth control. Heck, most countries in the world could use birth control. I wish there were a way to put in the water.

NO!

Make all US aid for the third world in the form of Planned Parenthood. Don?t have children you can?t feed, one reason I couldn?t stand Mother Teresa if she wanted to help the people she would have been passing out condoms.

Yeah, one of the best things about China is they actually started rewarding people for NOT having kids, that really is the mmost moral thing to do, it makes no sense to have more kids than you can possibly afford. Also if the population is stable then all increases in production translate into increases in standard of living instead of just increasing the population of poor people. I know energy conservation is all the rage and thats a GOOD thing, but really there is more than enough energy potential in this world to provide everyone with at least 1000W, especially if we keep the number of people steady.

I just looked at a laptop transformer to charge it and it takes 100-240V with 1.6A, so 160+ watts, which means no laptop for you. You could charge your cellphone.

no

1.6A @ the output voltage, not at input.. so if output is.. 16 volts? 16 x 1.6 = 25.6w, plus a bit for loss (SMPS isn't 100% efficient, depends on the design... lets say 85%) = 30 watts, full load.

I am glad I don't know many of you in my personal life, you sound like real cocksuckers, not to mention you're totally unable to answer a very simple hypothetical question!

BTW, India didn't take sh*t from you; you gave it to them.

no

no

I used the input reading, not the output. Output was 16 or 18 volts and about 3 amps, so 50 watts. If the input was set lower, the transformer could probably be more efficient than only a 1/3rd return on power investment, though.

Not only no, but HELL NO!

What possible reason would I have for giving a shit about people in an overcrowded 3rd world nation, especially one that has taken so many American jobs?

The question is vague, but would your answer be the same if you had a picture of the actual family in their little hovel and there were a couple of kids (who by their nature have no control over their surroundings) who relied on this water to live and without it would die of some nasty illness because you didn't want to drop to 100W?

Nope...not a bit.

So you mean your answer would change?

Sorry...mis-read your question.

NO, my answer would not change. Adding a set of faces to the equation would not make the slightest bit of difference. You must fall for the TV commercials where they show pics of kids in 3rd world nations while the organization begs for "sponsors." "Only 60 cents per day can do blah, blah, blah..."

And you?re for populations that can?t support themselves? Nothing conserves resources better than less people using them.

If India has enough money to make a nuclear bomb and build helicopters, then they can afford to generate power. Electricity is of limited use to people without plumbing that can not afford to buy a radio or a computer.
