if we went to war today (a conventional war - no nukes), and the draft were instituted, would you wait for your number to come up, or would go ahead and join the military (i guess this technically only applies to those living in the us, but those from afar can give your opinions.
 
As much as a coward as I sound I must say I would wait for the draft. Although once I'm in I'd fight as hard as I could for our country, I don't like the fact that I'm more quickly than necessary putting myself in grave danger. Though it does depend on the reasons for this war.
 
I am actually in the process of "signing" up right now, the only difference is that after college, I would go through OCS and become an officer instead of enlisting. I do not look forward to fighting, but I will serve my country to my best ability (if only I could fight as well as I do in RTCW... I could win a war single-handedly.. 🙂 )

where is the option for:
go to canada, go to jail or sign up for non-combative service

I voted sign up, but the problem is that they wouldn't let me. Actually, I'm not sure on that. I'm past the statutory age, but sometimes they make exceptions for prior servicemen with skills that are in need. So, I guess the answer would be; yes, it they'd want me.

well, he said, "If we went to war today" which implies(in my mind) that we would go to war where the conflict is currently(in the middle east) I personaly think that we screwed up with the middle east. But, I am also not sure if there is any cause that I think is worth fighting for, that's something that has been mulling around in my mind for a while.
 
I'm only 17 so I wouldn't be drafted and I could only join the Marines I think (with parental consent). But that being said I will probably be joining the military anyways after college (ROTC), so that in a way is 'signing up.'

We're considered part of the reserve. If the sh*t really hit the fan, we'd be 20th or 30th or some super-high number in line to go before they brought back the draft

i'd see if i agreed with the reason for fighting first... i think for 99% of the time, i would wait for the draft though. if they need me, they'll draft me, right? not much point in going early...

Actually, there is. Or, at least there was the last time the draft was in effect. If drafted, you go where they tell you and learn the skill that they tell you. Little, or no choice. By enlisting, you usually have some options.

I'm a puss? I never knew it was so brave to run off to my death. But after thinking about it... I'm sure I could join up and perhaps serve in my own way behind the lines. It's has nothing to do with being a wuss, I do start defensive line for my high school, I know what it's like to get hurt, but I have no desire to die.

Already signed up and in AFROTC getting training this summer. Wish I could go and do something right now, but then I realize that I am doing something that over 95% of the country is not.

Since I suck at fighting anyways, I don't see how I'd be much of a help... not only that but I haven't even shot a gun yet... lol, I think I'd pass on the artilery...

if it was a war though that I truly believed in fighting for, I would sign up...

But I don't have to worry for another 3 years anyways. I'll leave it at that.
 
Been there, done that. RVN 1968-1969. Two years after I had joined they still hadn't sent me, so I volunteered. Unpopular as that conflict is in retrospect, I am still proud to have served my country.

I am, unfortunately, a little too worn out from a lifetime of raising a family to be accepted back into the military. If I was capable I would be first in line.

There is a huge difference between the military age youth of today and those of 30 or 40 or 50 years ago. The young people of today think far more of their own welfare than they do of the welfare of their country or countrymen. It's a sad time.

I have nothing but the utmost respect for the military forces of the United States and especially, right now, for those yonng men engaged in heated battle with the Talilban in the mountains of Afghanistan. They are braving not only enemy gunfire, mortars and mines, but they are also doing this in thei bitter cold of the Afghan mountains in freezing weather.

My hat is off to the United States military.
 
I'm a computer nerd, if you give the afganistan fighters computers that can play CS, I'll beat them there but that's it.

Quite possibly the understatement of the year. 25 of the self-centered little pussy boys and counting. You nancy boys just sit in front of your computers/TV somebody will do this for you.
