I've been contemplating getting a Burgman 400/650 for a while, but a small scooter like I saw in Korea with an entire family and a refrigerator? No way!

Vespa's are HAWT!

Seriously though in South Beach it's becoming VERY trendy to go everywhere on a scooter even with the more money than god crowd.

I will still to my car and 5500 rpm shift points :)

Yamaha Zuma here. Perfect for nearby...useless if you take any highway or freeway.

How fast can it go (high speed and comfortable speed)?

40 mph.

The speedometer has it topped at 40, but it can go faster. Most zumas, especially the newer ones, have a top flat speed around 43 mph or so. If I'm on a slight incline I can usually push 45 or so. Hey 5 mph makes a difference ok!

I was actually looking at this. I live on the north side of Atlanta and my commute is from Norcross to Alpharetta so I don't have to hit the major highways. Unfortunately, Peachtree Parkway is part of my commute and it is a 4 lane road where speeds can hit 65mph. Scooters get up to about 60mph and that's probably pushing it. I'm not sure I'd want to be on the road with cars at that speed.

If my commute was only on roads that was 45mph or less, I would definitely consider one at the current gas prices.

I commute up and down PTree Parkway. I've seen several scooters along the way.

To go 55 you'd need at least a 150cc model. For safe travel on city interstates you might get away with it, but realistically you'd need a 200cc or greater if it is interstate.

Dumb question - can you drive a scooter with just an auto driver's license? I'm guessing there's a engine size requirement that differentiates a scooter/moped from a motorcycle?

Not a dumb question. From what I've read, it seems to depend on your state. But, as you guessed, after a certain engine size, you then need a motorcycle license.
