scooters are like fat chicks. they're fun to ride until your friends see you.

Well that's the question. Are we at the point, or where will be at the point soon where the price of gas and the hurt on your wallet will overcome the embarrassment of looking like a nerd. :)

My friend was telling me how he took his motorcycle (Its some little Japanese sport bike, not sure what, I don't know bikes) up to my house and he was waving to all the people on motorcycles and they waved back. Except this dude on a huge harley refused to wave, I guess because he was a snob. My friend was a little insulted by the break in code, but didn't really care. Then a little later he drives by some guy a scooter that waves at him and almost refused to wave himself.

Hell ya. I'd like to ride a 'real' bike once I can afford one... But it always comes back to which retard will turn infront of me cause they 'didn't see me'.

If the majority of people rode them, I'd do it because there wouldn't be as many big ass cars on the road to hit me. As it is, I wouldn't not feel safe on the freeways in Raleigh/Durham on a scooter.

I'd actually consider a small 250cc or 400cc bike. As long as It can handle 60mph and be somewhat reliable, it would save me a decent amount on gas vs my sedan.

if i had to take freeways to work, no way.

since i can stick to local roads to this office, sure, i would.

will the savings in gas offset the price of the scooter? nope.

why not? If you didn't have to take freeways etc... why not ride a scooter?
How are they any more dangerous than a motorcycle?

Hope the gas prices take care of that. I'd be more comfortable riding one in India, Vietnam and other Asian countries where the streets are filled with bikes than in North America. At least if I fall of, there's no 18-wheeler or SUV to finish me off.

When you say freeways how fast and how many lanes are you talking here?

well, i can see a 4 lane interstate outside of my office window (the office is on the service road)... traffic moving about 65-70 mph. i would not drive a scooter on that.

i'd drive on a parkway or something. like 45-50 mph max

I would if I didn't have to take my daughter to daycare. Unless there was a way to get her car seat on there...

on the way to an old office, there was a 3 lane divided parkway, with stop lights. speed limit was 45 or 50. obviously people drive faster than that. that would be the biggest and fastest road, i'd drive a scooter on and even then, that road got pretty sketchy, (traffic merging, turning, tailgating) at peak times.

My commute involves driving about 70-80mph on a 4-5 lane highway just to give you an idea and everyone drives like a bat out of hell so they get to work on time.

I'd have to think, when your commute is so short that you'd think about riding a scooter, gas prices are probably negligible anyways.

I commute about a mile to work... that 1 tank of gas a month isn't really stressing my budget, especially since with a scooter, I'd still have to use my car a lot anyways for shopping trips / going up north to visit my friends/parents.

People do that all the time on a bicycle.
