I shouldn't talk though. Here in Ontario, you can only buy alcohol from the Government.

Government, or the big brewery monopoly that's been trying to convince everyone that selling beer in grocery stores will bring on the apocalypse.

Congrats OP, sounds like a good move.

In Canada it's constitutional that you are allowed to have pets in any apartment. I think Landlords can turn you away if you have a pet, but if you move in with no pet and then get one they are obligated to let you, even if it is written into the lease. It's very interesting. Comes from the jurisprudence following from constitutionally entrenched freedom of association, if I remember correctly.

When I first arrived in South Korea I was staying in an apartment complex that was above a seafood restaurant. Across from my apartment there was a karaoke/billiards place that had a large blinking neon sign. A few times a week a white van would pull up with about 6-8 prostitutes. It was loud, and there was always a fight on either Friday or Saturday night. I remember walking to the corner 7/11 and watching two guys wrestling on the street. Soju drunks.

currently waiting on the landlord to approve/sign off on his end of the lease to make it all official :/

this is my first time going through a broker and I'm not altogether happy about the experience, but it's next to impossible to find a good apartment without one, because most owners don't want to have to deal with all the minutia themselves.

real estate agent said it shouldn't be a problem getting the landlord to agree to our two terms (March 1st move-in date and changing the lease to allow for 1 cat), but nothing's official till he signs.

woohoo. landlord agreed to our terms and signed his half of the lease

it'll be nice to get out of the city and back into the burbs, even if we are moving into the heart of a suburban downtown (but, no way we'd have gotten this amount of space plus off-street/reserved parking anywhere in Jersey City)

Am I thinking of someone else? Thought you were sharing half of grandma's house or something and probably going to end up with the whole thing?

Wow. All that and only a 30-45 minute drive to work. I'd be more concerned about living near the dry cleaner. I wouldn't want to live or work within 50 yards of that shit.

Let me clear this up.

1. In Ontario you cannot be denied a rental unit for having a pet.

2. You cannot be evicted for having a pet in Ontario.

3. you are obligated to care for said pet and make sure that it doesn't interfere with anyone else.
