I have a Samsung 17" CRT, that i run at 1152*768 and it has good quality. But i have had the wish for more viewable area for some time now.
I do mostly gaming, surfing and some work on my machine. So:
Do you think i should buy a good 19" CRT or is it worth to go for 21 or 22"? I guess 1280*960 would be the resolution to go for on a 19"!?

Sure, but what i mean is, is the difference to my 17" noticeable, or do i gain not enough to justify the money by going 19"?

well, once u get used to 19" its hard to go back to 17" (i have syncmaster 950p)

but at this point, i think it would be wiser for you to wait for a deal on good sized LCD or get 19" if there is a great deal.

im guessing they will have some killer LCD deals after thanksgiving.

Well......after carrying around my Samsung 900NF for the past two years ....moving from dorm to house...etc. I'd try to get an LCD........CRT is good....I would not hesistate to buy the 959NF(new?)....or other high end Samsung as I've been a Samsung monitor user for .........9 years now. Just to note.......my 900NF looks as sharp as it did when it was new.

I have bought the Samsung an hour ago, and am just blasted away by its quality! My Samsung 700p was good, but this one is great!

Btw: What res do you run on your 19"? Something in between 1280 and 1600 would be useful!?

I can't fit a 19" CRT on my desk. I probably can't fit a 17" CRT on my desk. Hence my 15" LCD.

The difference between a 17" and a 19" is huge. Definately worth it especially since 19" monitors are at the 'sweet spot' for price/size. The difference from 19" to 21" isn't that great but the price is gonna thump your wallet.

My wallet of course being thumped already by the 22" I just upgraded to from my 19"

why can't you change the fonts and keep the higher resolution?
The better question is how.
It is a pain in the .. to go thru and change all the desktop settings, especially trying to guess which ones really count or will not mess up icon stuff and command line stuff.

I want a proprotional setting option.
IE: keep everything proportional when changing resolution settings.
anyone know of such a thing?

i upgrade from 17" to a 19" Flat Compaq P910 and i am loving it. i now run 1280x1024 @ 90hz instead of 1024x768 and the extra desktop space is awesome... the physical dimensions arent that much more but a 21" will seriously hamper your real work area..

plus this mofo runs coutnerstrieke at 1600x1200 for 200$ :D

defininately get 19".. iw ould nevre go back.. or go up

unfortunately for me, my existing 17" is already trying to collapse my table.. so i'm saving for a 17" LCD, sure i can't play games well on it (definitely a good thing for me next year)!

As i said i have bought the 959nf and am very excited aboout it, great crt!!!

I run at 1280*960, because it keeps the aspect ratio of 1.33. 1280*1024 kinda distorts the picture, circles are not round anymore...

Congrats! As you now can see, there is a huge difference between a 17 & 19 inch. You would have been even more blown away if you made the jump to 21 inch.

I run my 19" at 1280 x 1024 with no problems. Perhaps you needed to make adjustments when you tried the size?

Alot of ppl like 1280x1024 with there 19 inch monitors. That's what i run at. when i had my 17 incher i ran 1024x768. Now would you notice a difference switching monitors from 17 to 19? I sure did. I noticed the extra size, and also my 19 inch is completely flat and my old one wasnt so a bouns there in the visual quality dept . I also get some awsome refresh rates that helped. 1280X1024@87hz is what i run at now, before i ran at 1024x768@75hz.

No, 1280x1024 is not 4:3 aspect ratio like the main resolutions (640x480, 800x600, 1600x1200, etc..). I run 1280x960 on my 19" for this reason as well, gots to have my accurate geometry :)

I would appreciate a resolution in between 1280 and 1600, like 1400*1050, i think this would be perfect.

I just bought a Philips 109b20 for $120 shipped after rebates... saw it on chubbywallet... GREAT DEAL! I think it has a much bigger viewable image size than my 17" Dell flatscreen CRT (Trinitron style). The Philips is a Shadowmask. If you can find one for a deal like I did, definitely go for it.

Tools like PowerStrip can create custom resolutions.

I'm not sure video drivers are optimized for anything but the stock resolutions so for gaming you may wish to stick with the tried-and-true. Should be fine for the Desktop, though.

I will never EVER run 1280x1024.

I thought the guys who preached the 1280x960 were just geeks. Little did I realize that my monitor(955DF) was slowly started to annoy with it's crooked lines.

Well now it's back at 1152x864, because there is no 1280x960 setting. It's weird, but no more crooked lines. Well for the most part. AWESOME.

:D

Oh yea, 17-19" isn't that noticeable until you go back to a 17" screen. 19" is definitely worth it. You get what you pay for. Go for the gusto, Sony or Hitachi!
