That should take care of the problem.

And somebody else's too, as you'll be fired and somebody else will have a new job.

Yeah... good luck with that one. You gotta be flexible with your schedule in IT, especially in jobs with 24/7 support responsibilities.

That said, his boss needs to be more flexible as well. Bad economy or no, people WILL let fed up and leave if his boss acts like an asshole and doesn't give time off when needed.

(Emphasis on NEEDED... you don't NEED time off to play WoW.)

Is this serious? This isn't a parody or anything?

OP, you got issues. WoW is a game. You picked a career. Career > Game

Nah, WoW is for carebears, but that's another thread entirely.

The reality is, it doesn't matter why he wants to shift his work schedule by 30 minutes. It's a perfectly reasonable request, and while it may be a pita to balance these types of requests against other competing requests from my other employees, that's just part and parcel of being an operations manager (yes, I speak from experience managing a 24/5 3-shift multi-site operation, about 25 employees at the time).

If Loki is a quality employee I want to retain, has a good track record of showing up for work on time, busting his ass, and bailing me out when other employees miss a shift, I'm probably going to approve the request - assuming it doesn't negatively impact my operation (which includes his fellow employees)...especially if I just swapped his working hours around.

If he's a shitty employee or the FNG, I'd probably tell him to go pound sand.

Sure, I can be a hard-ass and take advantage of the fact that my employees probably don't have any other opportunities right now due to the economy...and my employees can fuck me by calling out sick every time they get the sniffles, or half-ass their work, or any number of other things that make me look like an incompetent dickwad. Besides, being a hard-ass will only work right up until the economy turns around, and then my shop would go right into the shitter (if it hasn't already) because all of my decent employees are working for my competitors.

Egg-zacly...but the OP's problem will be fixed...and will have lots of time to Wow!

If you're a salary slave and the boss wants you to work certain hours, you work them or find a new job. PERIOD.

While this COULD possibly be fixed by giving the OP some room for flex hours, the boss doesn't HAVE to do so.

If you kids all think the world revolves around YOU, and that your boss HAS to let you work hours that are convenient to YOU...the real world may still have things to teach you.

SOMETIMES, companies are OK with some flexible hours...sometimes they're not. Personally, I've never had that option.

If he really said "If you have a problem with it, take it up with my boss", then I'd go to his boss and just start by saying, "I brought this up to Bill but he wasn't interested and wouldn't listen and said I should talk to you about it instead." Then just rationally explain your concerns.

And don't shoot yourself in the foot by mentioning WoW. At all. Even if asked! Say that you have family matters to attend to that day or something.

Wow, just wow.

Seriously...

It's a fucking game and you're an adult... /wrists now

it's seriously not about warcraft... if it was that important to me, I'd bring my laptop to work and go into a conference room for the raid as soon as my shift ended.

it's about a boss not being willing to compromise on something so trivial for one of the most loyal employees in the department.

Whenever possible go over your immediate bosses head.
Its highly likely that in the tiered management bullshit you deal with that your boss is completely useless anyway.

He wants someone to work the weekend so he doesn't have to man up and take responsibility for the ultimate completion of his duties.
Your boss sounds like the typical middle management ilk. Mostly useless.
